Tri-Sigma vs. Tri-Sig?

Hey ladies!

I know that we do not use the term "Tri-Sig" in reference to ourselves, but does anyone know the official reason? The story at Beta Xi is that there is a lesbian commune somewhere in California named TriSig, but is that the truth? Just wondering...

We dont even refer to ourselves as "tri-sigs" at shepherd college---sounds to much like that stupid stereotype, My favorite is the triple E honeys, it cracks me up.

Hello Sigma ladies!

My mom was a member of Tri-Sigma at Loyola University, New Orleans in the 60s. She refers to the sorority as both "Tri-Sig" or "Tri-Sigma" I guess things were different back then http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hello Sigmas!
I had it explained to me by one of your very sweet leadership consultants several years ago when Tri-Sigma was colonizing on our campus: When both Phi Sigma Sigma and Tri-Sigma are on campus, "Tri-Sig" often gets confused with "Phi-Sig" because they rhyme. So "Tri-Sigma" was used to cut down the confusion. That explanation made sense for our campus since we had both sororities on campus, but I don't know if that's the *official* reason.
Alpha Gam Love to You!

Tri sig vs Sigma Sigma Sigma

Over the years there have been many reasons why Tri Sig is Tri
Sig or not. Some said Tri Sig is a little sister of Delta Delta Delta, aka Tri Delt...whatever...
I have never heard the lesbian one. That is pure bull puckey....
I have seen many Tri Sig chapters in my 40 + years as a TKE. I
am currently active with TKE as a 65 year old alum in Denver.
What I do remember, though, is that the ladies of Sigma Sigma
Sigma were bright, pretty, had manners and were among the
finest of all the Greeks...so there...so long as they talk about you,
you are o.k. But I have known that a long, long time!
Love, Erik -- an old Kansas Teke

AlphaMu Sigma 11-12-2001 11:48 PM

That is no true!
You shouldn't call it Tri Sig b/c it isn't Tri Sig it is Tri Sigma. That is the only reason that have made this a RULE! feel free to e-mail me i would love to be in contact with other sigmas!

We have discontinued the use of Tri Sig, just as the Alpha Mu stated, because we are not Sig Sig Sig, we are Tri Sigma ~ Sigma Sigma Sigma and we would like our 'nickname' to be more in line with our true name. We were never any part of Tri Delta and were founded as one of the Farmville Four, which were 4 sororities founded in Farmville, Virginia. Tri Delta was not part of the Farmville Four.

You know, in the final analysis, what difference does it make?
While you may prefer Tri Sigma as the moniker, Tri Sig is easier to say, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with it being Sig Sig
Sig vs. Sigma Sigma Sigma. We love you anyway. And as a
sagacious Beta friend of mine said "So long as they talk about
you, you're okay."

Tri Sigma (no dash...just Tri Sigma)

To Erik, and sisters :)

Erik, as the sweetheart of a fellow frater of TKE I would have to agree fully with Robbie who is amazing and has such vast knowledge of Tri Sigma. It actually does matter to our sorority what we are called, as I'm sure it matters to your fraternity (who's letters I wear every day along with mine).

Why would it irritate a Tri Sigma to be called a Tri Sig? Just some thoughts.
Well, what is a Sig? Noone seems to know.
Sig rhymes with too many other derogatory words (Tri Pig...) which we would not like to be referred as.
It is not harder to say Tri Sigma vs. Tri Sig, it's actually just habit.

You are correct though, most (not all) publicity is great, it's great that people are talking about us. We just always want to make sure it's in a positive light.

Ever Forward,

out of touch

Obviously I am out of touch. I have expunged "Tri Sig" from my
present vocabulary as I certainly do not wish to offend any of you in your fine organization.
So, I will yield, I am wrong... yet I still have good memories of the times with the Tri Sigs, now Tri Sigmas!
Best wishes, Erik the old TKE from Denver

Robbie 12-12-2001 12:09 PM

Dear Erik,
First of all, thank you for speaking so highly and kindly of Tri Sigma. Tracie is right, it's just habit and we have so many wonderful alumnae who are out-of-touch with the national end of the organization who still say Tri Sig, and we just love them all the same. When given the opportunity, I just try to educate Sisters and other fellow Greeks on our new ideas and thoughts as we move Tri Sigma ever forward. OH, and I dated a TKE in college!!!!

ASAChick 03-15-2002 02:26 AM

tri sigma

I dont understand what it really matters! Isn't it just a way of shortening it? so you dont have to say sigma sigma sigma all the time? It probably got shortened to tri-sigma at first and then someone said tri-sig! Ever fraternity and sorority shorten their names!

Actually, there is a group called Tri-Ess which is a sorority (with chapters and everything) that serves as a support group for cross-dressers and their loved ones. Tri-Ess comes from their full name...the Society for the Second Self.

TriSigmaTX 03-15-2002 11:47 PM

33girl,

You are correct. That organization is real and some of us know of it, but don't flaunt it. (I'm laughing here). It's interesting that you would know that.
