Is anyone a nutritionist or a dietician??

I have very recently decided to switch paths completely and go from a confused, sometimes bored, Communications major with no goals to a Nutrition major. I am somewhat overwhelmed, but in a good way because I am so sure this is what I want to do, and in 24 years, I've never had that feeling. I'm starting small with one Biology class and going from there.

I would love to hear if anyone is in a career like this, what they do specifically, how they like it, personal stories, etc etc.

I'm not a dietitian but I do PR for a company that employs dietitians in our marketing department. I too have been thinking about going back to school to supplement my comm degree with nutrition classes, so I know what they're talking about.

The only think I've heard from my coworkers is that it's hard to find good jobs. Most of them worked in hospitals or nursing homes before happening upon our company. However, you may be able to find a job with a commodity promotional organization where you could use your communication skills, too.

Good luck!

I'm not, but I took a nutrition class (and got an A) and fell in love with the subject. I believe you can work for food companies or pick up a food science major as well.
I wanted to go into animal nutrition and work for feed companies. Really what I loved about nutrition was the medical aspect (my true calling) but it's a fascinating subject. If you feel that strongly about it, you will find a career. Good thing about college is that they help you pursue careers with your major too.
You don't have to be a dietician though you can be. One of my friends majored in nutrition after taking the same class I did and she now works at a brewery doing quality control. So there are a variety of options for the major.
If you really love it, do it. Listen to your heart.

not a nutritionist but majored in Family/Consumer Sciences until i realized i wasn't going to graduate (whole 'nother story).

Anyway, if this is your goal, go for it. The career opportunities are plentiful. You can always follow up your undergrad with a Masters in the same field, or Public Health to maximize your earning potential.

You should look into joining your student org on campus and affiliating with the National group so you can network.

I'm not a dietician but I have some good friends who are, worked with dieticians fairly closely before and my best friend just went back to school to be a dietician for her second career (after being an environmental scientist). The ones I worked with were in hospitals and did work with adolescent girls with eating disorders, teaching diabetics how to follow their diabetic diets, helped patients learn healthy eating habits, lose weight, lower their blood pressure, etc. It seems like a very rewarding job to be and one that I would probably enjoy (although I would look like a total hypocrit since I'm not exactly the model of healthy eating!). My friend who is back in school for it now did it because she has lost 100 pounds through healthy eating and exercise and wants to help others do the same. I think she'll be great at it because she'll truly understand what her patients are going through and she has taken a lot of time to teach herself what is healthy and what is not to get to this point personally. All the dieticians I know have this cool set of plastic food that, I guess, reminds me of when we played house or restaurant as kids..lol. Looks like fun to me!
