Question about a tie tac....so to speak
Ok Brothers,
Im a rather large guy, about 6'5" and around the 310 poundage marker, and I have a problem when it comes to wearing a tie. I always have to make the small end shorter so that they look proper when I wear them, and I absolutely hate when the small part doesnt stay behind the big part because it will not fit into the provided loops. I have thought about a tie bar, but it would look pretty odd because it would have to be so far up that it wouldnt fit right. So my question is: Do we have anything that could be used as a 'tie tac', or does anyone have any suggestions other than buying from the Big & Tall section (most of the time they are too expensive, and I can find better ties cheaper in normal sizes). Would the lapel pin or friendship pin suffice, or would that be in bad taste or possibly even improper use of said pins. Please help me out and let me know what you guys think. |
Please excuse me for intruding on your forum, but I was wondering if you couldn't just use a small safety pin in such a way that you couldn't see it? I've done that before in a similar situation.
I also say this because I don't especially like tie bars or tie tacks. |
Oh it is no intrusion what-so-ever, and I have thought about doing that as well, but I was curious as to whether we had something that could be used to also signify that I was a Lambda Chi, plus I have never seen this particular topic brought up and it is always fun to here what my brothers and and other fraternities'(sp?) brothers also think. So I really do appreciate your opinion, because that is exactly what I am looking for.
Oh and just out of curiousity what Fraternity are you a brother of? |
I think you should be fine Trey. I'm 6-4 and feel your pain with ties.
Tie pins have been gaining in popularity around my area. Of course, if you use one and then don't use it anymore, you'll have a little hole in your tie! |
I just bought this and I think it'll work nicely...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...2400&rd=1&rd=1 I'm about 6'3" 230 and this is exactly what the doctor ordered...:-) In ZAX, Brandon |
In the past, I have used the small coat of arms pin as a tie tack. As far as I know, there's no regulation as to where or how you wear that one.
I stopped using it, because having little holes poked in the fronts of all my ties got to be more annoying than the tail flopping. Ottor |
We have some big guys here at LXA!

Not to be"little" big guys, but ties and most male clothing are made for normal people.
What is normal any more? I have a Lion Rampant Tie that I love but one has to learn to tie it VERY Carefully.:D Will not put holes in it at all. Yepper gammazeta, no matter how small the pin is, it leaves holes!:( Maybe a tie bar would be better in fact. Saw one years ago on ebay. Lost it! |
Well I'm glad to see we have so many little people posting on the forums now. For those of you I haven't met yet, I'm the 6'8" 325lb guy in all the GC LCA photos.
For those of you who are big and tall, I have a few suggestions. Primarily Mens Wearhouse. If you go in and meet one of the salesmen they are usually very good about ordering in anything you want. They carry a wide selection of larger sizes in shirts and suits. They also have long ties and braces (aka suspenders). Second choice for me is Dillards. They have a good big and tall section. They sell Gold Toe socks in large size and often have a decent selection of long ties and tall Polo shirts. There also are other choices, but they aren't as good in my opinion. Finally Mens Wearhouse and JCPenny's offer custom shirts and MWH has custom suits for not much more than off the rack. If you have any questions about shopping for suits etc. for yourself feel free to ask. |
One other thing:
Learn how to tie more than one knot. A half Windsor or Four in Hand will give you more tie to work with. |
Senureset I,
That was my first thought as I seen the colors, but I wanted to make sure because I think it could also have been Sigma Nu with the Gold and Black (I think). The reason that Alpha Phi Alpha popped into my mind first is because I attend North Carolina A & T State University, which I am sure that you have heard of...LOL, so naturally since I attend an HBCU; A-Phi-A was my first guess.:D Oh and to the brothers that posted some suggestions on the tie-tac, I really do appreciate the help. I guess im just gonna have to see what works out best and experiment a little bit. Oh and Tom, I believe that you can purchase the 'official' tie bar from Herff-Jones (Which I know you LOVE:D ) I think it runs like $40. |
Trey, HJ, yes my ah!:D
I hate putting holes in cloth of any kind as Otter said. Tacky for sure. If one notices, in most jackets there are no button holes anymore either. So, just be gentle where your pin is going in and to what!!!!;) It is not only hard for some of MY LARGER Brothers, it is hard for short Brothers with My and others build too!:D |

Wow, they have some really NEAT stuff... Thanks for the tip, guys! I'm going to pass this on to my Zeta. In ZAX, Brandon |
It used to be (maybe still is) custom at some chapters (like Murray State)
to use their AM pins as tie tacks after initiation. I've tried it a couple of times but usually use the small CnC pin for a tie tac.....for my ties with the little hole in them! ha ha! |
