Has anyone ever rented in the Outer Banks? Who did you rent from, and what was the location? Did you rent a house, condo, etc? How many were with you? I am trying to set up a spring break trip and if that goes well, my family would like to do something similar. Thanks in advance!

What part of the outer banks were you thinking...? Narrowing it down somewhat may help in your search.


It searches from Corolla to Cape Hatteras.

Some pretty popular areas are Duck, Nags Head, Avon, and Hatteras.

I know that they have a list of companies that provide accomodations from houses to hotels to bed & breakfast joints. It may be worth looking at...! Good luck! :)

I'm from eastern NC, got married in the Outer Banks and my husband and I and both of our families vacation there every year. My favorite area is Pine Island. We usually rent places that sleep at least 10 people. Twiddy and Carolina Designs are the ones that we have used. Have fun!

Hey, we have been going down to the Outer Banks for about twenty years...pre everyone has bumper stickers with obx and no one knew about this paradise...

We have always dealt with Southern Shores (they are of course SouthernShores.com) and they have a brochure which lists all the wonderful array of homes for rentals...fancy, elaborate, down to earth, bare bones....but all have always been clean, nice, and the best place we enjoy for a vacation getaway and treasure each vacation with the best of memories no matter which one we selected..even one which was the cheapest...but it was so close to the ocean, who cared????

So, try them....we are still using them and have NEVER had any problems with them--been treated like royalty. The only thing we ever had to concern ourselves with is how much we could afford: it is like picking diamonds --good, better, best and wow!

Any other questions or anything else I can tell you...except that when you go...check and ask what is really in whichever house you select....it helps cut down on all the stuff you cram in your car. They are usually soup to nuts and all you bring is your family, clothes and food. The kitchens are fully stocked as to basics, depending upon the particular family: games to select from, possibly boogie boards, surf boards, lounge chairs, grills, stuff that you are allowed to borrow just treat it like it was yours and leave it that way when you depart.

They mainly like the rental left in the condition you found it. You know, like if you stayed with a close relative!

Best of everything..hope you can tear yourself away after the lure of the Outer Banks gets into your blood.....it is still a paradise struggling to survive despite the storms and erosion. Would love to see your face the first time you run up and down one of the dunes!!

Thanks so much for the great reply, sounds like you have a great time in the OBX! I was just wondering, how is the weather there? Our spring break is mid-March (the 12-16). Any ideas of how cold/hot it is? Also during the early part of summer, late May, early June? Thanks again :p

Actually, most folks would consider the Outer Banks to go from Corolla (which is not pronounced like the car) to Ocracoke Island, Portsmouth Island, Core Banks and Shakleford Banks. The latter three are uninhabited, although a handful or two of families used to have very rustic summer cottages around Cape Lookout. Those places have since been bought up by the government as part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. I had my first taste of moonshine there.

I feel so very, very old. I remember when Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton and Frisco were nothing more than fishing villages (and when Old Christmas was celebrated there), when the paved road pretty much stopped at the small village of Duck and Corolla was very hard to get to, and when one could walk down the road in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills or Kitty Hawk and pass wide open spaces with old cottages here and there.

Don't get me wrong -- I still love going there, but I can get a bit sad seeing what has been lost with all of the "progress" in recent decades.

In Mid-March, typically somewhere in the 50s or maybe low 60s, but the water will be cold (in the 40s). In late May or early June, it will probably be up into the 70s or 80s, maybe warmer, and the water should be a fair deal warmer (around 70).

I wouldn't count on it being too warm in mid-March. It won't be a frigid nightmare, but not as warm as Miami either. It is still gorgeous and a good place to get away and relax. But don't expect anything near the scope of Panama City or Daytona as far as warmth or avenues to express yourselves socially. Late May, early June will definitely be warmer. We did a week there around that time when I was in college. Weather was fab.
