NEW YORK -- The Denver Nuggets were the bigger losers Monday after the NBA handed out penalties in the fight that broke out near the end of Saturday night's game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Denver's Carmelo Anthony, the NBA's leading scorer, was suspended 15 games for sucker-punching the Knicks' Mardy Collins. Denver teammate J.R. Smith and New York's Nate Robinson also received stiff penalties from the league -- 10-game suspensions.

"It is our obligation to take the strongest possible steps to avoid such failures in the future and to make a statement to all who follow the game of basketball that we understand our obligations and take them seriously," NBA commissioner David Stern said in a statement.

Glad I'm not the only person who saw that, lol.

I dont understand their reasoning...you want to support your team but how are you going to do that now that you are out for 15 games. STUPID. Granted the foul was ridiculous...they should know how to remain professional and not give the WPs more ish to say about them.

Thoughts on Knicks/Nuggets

Just wanted to share some thoughts on this.

We already have a professional sports league where fighting DURING the game is "sanctioned" so to speak and rarely frowned upon. Fans show up expecting a fight and the sportscasters rarely mention it and neither do the sports writers. Whats even worse the media and the powers that be do not penalize or stigmatize those players as much....

They are the NHL-National Hockey League. They average about 1 bloody brawl a game!! and its not paraded on the news as a bunch of reckless, overpaid, immature, classless players. Ironically, those terms are rampant in the media portrayal of our ball players when they have fights. Lets be mindful on which set of lenses we are viewing this situation through and how it only bolsters their argument that Black ball players are not professional as their white counterparts!

I am a sportsfan and I can recognize that in the heat of the battle, emotions can rage and fists can fly, but just like in first grade we used to shake it off and go back to the game with no hard feelings, but now its front page news, and top of the hour on ESPN and these wannabe sports analysts are just eager to label Black players as volatile, uncontrollable and violent. But in the end this means more attention to the teams whether positive or negative. The saying goes...any publicity is good publicity. Commissioner Stern finally has some work to do!

Lets be careful on our rushed judgements and look carefully at the entire forest and not just one tree in our immediate view!

Peace and Thanks!

Although I have felt that David Stern has been taking his position a little too far, I have to agree w/this recent decision. These kids - and I'm serious when I say kids - need to learn how to THINK they should be acting like adults and leave that playground s*** at the playground. The foul was VERY wrong no doubt and needed to be dealt with - but the brawl was VERY unncessary....

No that is not a "Stick N Move" it is called " I don't want to get hit so I am going to sucker punch dude and back up like a punk". If he was really grimy he would have sucker punched him, stood his ground and hit him again. I think he did that because he didn't want to be the only one on the floor not getting into it. He could have been "incognegro" like Stephan Marbury. And we all know Stephan is not going to fight, he is scared someone is going to steal his jewelry again at a stop light!!:D :D :D :D

What they need to do is start banning teams from post season play like they do the collegiate teams when they violate the rules.

Did you hear Isiah say that he was telling Melo not to take it to the paint because they were already beating the Knicks by 19 points and that he didn't have to add insult to injury. He claimed Melo should have shown a little class by not adding salt to the wound. As a player back in his day he wouldn't have stopped playing hard just because his team was up by 19. He would have continued to grind the other team into the ground. I think he is real soft and that is why the Knicks look horrible. The players that play ball at the park on West 4th in Manhattan in the summer are better than that team.

I'm convinced that this is yet another step in Isiah Thomas secret desire to run a once great organization and franchise into the ground. With the NBA's penchant to run black coaches out I can't figure out short of a pact with the devil WHY this fool is still in the position of destroying my once favored team. He should have been the first to be sanctioned and fined for his actions but once again Isiah gets away with murder. The stands are empty, real Knicks fans are waiting for him to be removed so we can resume HOPE and talk about our rebuilding years post Isiah. Its all futile with the bum in office right now...:(

It just seems that ever since he came into the organization they have progressively gotten worse. I liked him as a player, but as management he bites the big one.

DLTA, I think the difference in perception has to do with more than on the field...You rarely see hockey players getting into trouble like NBA players do.

AI is now a Denver Nugget

^^^^
:( :( I was hoping he would wind up with a sorry team. I can see him and 'Mello not getting along (once 'Mello comes back, of course).

And I bet you if Larry Brown was still coach, that fight would have never happened.

It's going to be interesting once Melo comes back since they love shooting the ball so much. I mean Melo is averaging 31.6 and AI at 31.2, so this puts them 1 and 2 perspectively....all in all I think that AI is going to make this team strong, and for real though, I am going to miss AI.
