"We Are Marshall"/ Pi Kappa Alpha

Sad yet heart warming story relating to new movie:

I found out, thanks to Google, that an Alpha Gam pledge sister's hubby was supposed to be on that plane but he had a teacher's exam to take so he could get a job.

I've seen a number of interviews with Delt Brother Matthew McConaughey who has taken this story/movie very seriously.

Personally, I remember the incident well because Marshall was supposed to play us (Ohio University) the next week in Athens.

Instead, there was a memorial service in our stadium. I was there.

Very sad.

I just saw the movie.

Probably not an award winner -- but not bad in my personal opinion. Not nearly as bad as some of the critics say, and parts of it were pretty good.

It could have used some pace in places.

Having gone to school 75 miles away from Marshall, though, it sure brought back some memories.

Well the critics also liked a certain terrible and unrealistic movie about 2 gay cowboys. We Are Marshall is a fantastic movie. Sure, it could have been better here and there, but overall I thought it was great. I'll take an inspirational true story over artistic and unentertaining crap that critics love any day.

6% can not always be wrong :) :D :) :D :) :D :) :D :) :D
Just like all the Westerns we grew up with seemed to miss the fact that between 1/4 and 1/3 of Cowboys were Black.
And there were Blacks on both sides of a Badge as well.

It would be nice to get back to the movie. Not every thread has to become a debate on sexuality and race.

Maybe I'm wrong.

Movie came up at dinner tonight. While no one has seen it yet, several including myself due intend to see it.

Then all the work of the people involved in the movie worked.

While the Marshall crash is the worst of which I'm aware, it might be good to reflect on other sports/air related tragedies.

Included would be the Cal-Poly crash in the 1960's in which several members of the football team were killed leaving Bowling Green, the Wichita State crash only weeks before the Marshall accident, the crash of the aircraft with the U.S. Olympic Skating team and the crash here in Denver a few years ago which killed members of the Oklahoma State University basketball team.

There may be more, but those immediately come to mind.

Maybe while seeing this movie, we might reflect on those others and keep them in our thoughts.

While there is no relationship at all, I also can't forget that just months before the Marshall crash, the four students were killed at Kent State.

Wichita, Marshall, Kent State -- 1970 was a tragic year for college students.
