Alum Assoc TIN stolen! Help!

Hey Everyone,
I'm not certain if this should go under Risk Mgmt or Alum stuff, so please move if necessary.

Tonight my sister was putting groceries in her car when a guy drove up to her car, literally so close he physically hit her, grabbed her purse and peeled out of the parking lot. She's fine, but firey mad!!! She got the guys tag #, decription, etc and the police are locating him. She was able to confirm that he withdrew money out of her accounts within about 20 minutes!!! How's that for a Merry Christmas.

Here's the fun part. She just opened a new bank account for our alumnae association this week....and still had the TIN paperwork, etc in her purse. She has placed a hold on the account and will close it tomorrow morning, but the TIN paperwork, which is now in the hands of the thief, is under my name, address, and SSN.

I've got to call the bank and the rest of the planet tomorrow to cover myself with the SSN, but as far as TIN's for an alumnae association, I hardly know where to start. I know there are some legal minds on here....any advice? Would my FHQ have any idea? Please help!!!
-Trish

Don't worry.....Tom Earp will find a way to blame it on your sorority......so its probably in the right place.

Sorry to hear about this happening to you Trish. Definitely be sure to call ALL of the credit bureaus tomorrow. Contact your HQ in terms of what to do for the sorority stuff.

Really Macallen, can this thread at least, be spared from your attempt to dog someone? I need advice, not you putting someone else down.

And PS...I've already thought about the risk mgmt implications to my sorority, so go ahead and lump me into to what you are trying to make fun of if you'd like.

Sorry, but please!

Anyone else have advice?

For now, call either one of the credit agencies to place an initial fraud alert for 3 months. What this will do is that if someone happens to apply for a credit card under your social, they would have to call you to confirm. Also they'll try to screen things. But as to the extend how much they'll do, it's hard to tell.

You may want to consider a full package that you pay roughly $10 a month to monitor your report. That for sure will call and alert you if anyone uses your social to open any accounts or so. One alert on an agency will automatically apply for other agencies (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion)

After that, depending on the situtation, worse comes worse, apply for a new social.

Yep, this is coming from someone who's a victim of ID theft. :(

Macallan.

Well.......first I would stop typing on a message board searching for advice and start making phone calls. I've called credit card companies in the middle of the night.....and my bank has 24 hour customer service. Request to be put on fraud alert to alleviate the identity theft business. Honestly though, if the thief was dumb enought to make withdraws.....chances are hes too dumb to do anything else.

Unless your local law enforcement has down syndrome......there should be no reason why they couldn't capture the villain using license plates, description, security cameras, etc.

I believe Earp was trying to dog SAE when a member died.

Yes and I get that turn around is fair play, but Earp's not even in this thread.

Dog Earp when he deserves it. Just not everyone else too.

I don't think I dogged anyone else.

Trish, I'm sooo sorry.

When I am standing next to someone at the checkout counter and they have their SSN card in their wallet, I want to remind them that that's a stupid thing to do (okay, I'd be nicer;).

In my job, we get calls several times a week about stolen identity whether it's the whole name/dob/ssn or name or ssn.

We can't take the inaccurate info off the bad guy's record unless we get a letter from the arresting agency giving us permission to take it off.

Well, I've spent a lot of time digging around the IRS website, etc. I took care of my personal information (bank, credit unions, FTC) very quickly because that piece was a no brainer. Getting a new TIN from the IRS appears to be more difficult, but doable.

Thanks for those who offered their advice. Thanks AZ-AlphaXi....I left Tori a message, though I haven't heard from her yet.
