Question for anyone who can help
 

Hello there is this sorority that I really want to join since I started college. I found out that they have a rush coming up and I meet all the qualifications, but there is one problem the dues. I was wondering if the dues were due up front when you are selected or can I pay in payments or should I wait until the spring when I have the money to pay up front. Please give me some advice.

Unique,I just got my daughter's first bill. I'm sure each house does it a little differently but hers gave the option of paying for the semester in full, or paying in three installments with a $10 service fee. I would ask someone..I would hate to have you not join the group you like when something could probably be worked out. Good luck.

Our treasurer has tons of super-flexible payment plans!! Don't not do it because of the money until you talk it out with the treasurer! Believe me, it my seem like a silly thing to ask now, but as a sister, you would not understand how many women are concerned with how they are going to pay their dues!! ASK!!!

From an NPHC point of view, I think you're getting ahead of yourself. Just because you think you meet the qualifications does not mean that you will be extended an invitation for membership. As others have stated before, you won't know how you'll be expected to pay initiation fees and dues until you ask. But, I wouldn't ask this particular question at the rush. Save it for a one-on-one conversation with that person in the organization whom you know very well.

Definitely ask the sisters about this. I was unsure if I could afford being in a sorority, but the sisters reassured me. I don't know about the sorority you are looking at, but I can pay as money whenever I have it and as much as I want, the only requirement is that I pay the total amount due by the end of the semester.

During NPC rush, during one round, all houses must disclose financial information and what is expected of members. The person usually giving this information is the treasurer. Ask someone to introduce you to her, and express your concerns. On my campus, we can charge our dues to our student accounts as an option - but our treasurer has lots of options for us. Also find out how dues are going to change (our dues are most expensive (by a lot) our first term and go down from there)

I know for all the NPC groups I have been associated with, that the first semester (i.e. the new member period) is the most expensive because you have to pay for new member fees, initiation fees, badge fees, etc. After that you'll usually see a considerable decrease in dues and yes payment plans are the way to go! If you are interested in an NPC group, then financial info has to be disclosed to you up front.

We had information sessions with our Rho Chis, where they described the financial obligations BEFORE you signed your bid, as well as an outline of what the dues paid for (ie, insurance, social). Since one of our membership criteria is "Financial Responsibility" in regards to dues and payments, it would be downright hypocritical NOT to inform prospective members of the financial obligations involved with membership. Sometimes, it was discussed during Rush, towards the end.

What happens if a group (NPC) fails to inform prospectives of the involved costs? Is it considered a rush infraction?

Ask! Not only are dues different for each sorority, but they are different by chapter too. If say Delta Zeta (my sorority) has 100 member at University of California (these are only examples) they might have to pay X amount because they have a huge number of sisters, while where I went to school and there were only about 30 of us, we have to pay Y amount because we have less girls to worry about.

Not to mention that a lot of organizations will let you set up a payment plan.

Wait and see if you get a bid, and then talk to the treasurer about your situation. She will probably be more than willing to make a customized payment program to meet your needs. Good luck!
