What to wear to a holiday party

Okay, my boyfriend is like superkid among the university administration and as such he has been invited to the University Chancellor's holiday party. This means I get to go as well and talk to people I don't know for 2 hours :D

I have no idea what to wear, I don't know what would be appropriate dress. The wording on the invitation is as follows:

Town/Gown Holiday Buffet 6:30-8:30pm.

SO bought a suit to wear. What do I wear? And while we're at it, let's see pictures and suggestions of dresses I cannot hope to afford ever because pretty dress shopping on the internet is awesome!

Buffet doesn't sound to fancy, but it's an evening event, wear a nice fall dress. Did you ask your boyfriend?

What time are your boyfriend's work hours? Since it starts at 6:30, I have a feeling that a lot of people will be going there straight from work. I would wear something nice, but conservative, and not overly dressy. For my company Holiday party, I will most likely be wearing this skirt

and I'm not sure of what top yet.

It's 6:30pm on a Saturday. He has the unusual honour of being one of five students invited to come and purely on his on awesomeness. The others are like the president of the SGA and the head of the student alumni association. Anyway, minus the bragging...
I still have no clue how dressy I need to be.

If he is wearing a suit....I would wear a nice, long dress. Just because it says buffet doesn't mean it can't ge semi-formal.

I like this one in green:

this one in red:

or this one in coal

They're nice enough that you won't look underdressed, but not so nice that you'll look like you're going to your Senior Prom if everyone else is in suits or plain skirts/tops.

I am too lazy to do anything more than post the links. Sorry :(

that's exactly what I thought...I have an awesome Ralph Lauren long dress in a paisleyish print that would be perfect and is holiday-like without being CHRISTMAS. If I could send it over to you and get it there in time I would :)

Panhellenic sisters are the best :D I have to warn you, I am a stick! I wonder if I can find something at Cache?

I wanted to post pics but their site wouldn't let me right click...If you're going for cheap, what about Forever21? Especially since you said you're a stick, they tend to run petite.

I liked these:

I think a basic black dress is always in good style. Call me old fashioned (but not old, I AM only 28) but I feel like for an occasion like this it's always chic and in style. Plus they come in a good price range, the one at forever 21 was only 29 and really cute. I got mine a few years ago at Dillards on clearance for only 14$ and I have worn it many many times. With a basic black dress you can wear nice jewlery or maybe a scarf and really look great without killing your budget.

I would go with black, or some other solid color, cocktail dress (knee length). It's what they were invented for. I quite like the green J.Crew dress posted above...you get the idea.

I was checking Overstock.com too to see what I could find. What is the dollar limit?
