which sorority?
so a few friends and i are thinking about starting a new chapter of a social sorority (or co-ed frat perhaps) at our university. we're trying to decide which one would be best. we are kind of off-beat.. not your typical sorority girls i guess. sort of the indy + geeky + laid back crowd. are there any sororities that have this sort of image? or does it really vary between universities?

Check out the search function. You can find lots of information about this topic discussed rather extensively throughout the forums. "Images" vary by campus. If you're an XYZ on one campus, someone might say, "WOW! You're in XYZ! That's so cool! They're awesome." At a campus on the other end of the state, they many say, "You're in XYZ? Um, wow. But you're so normal." The image shouldn't be your first concern. Until you figure out what should be your first concern in a sorority, you probably shouldn't bother trying to start one/join one/contact one.
Forgive the snippiness - I'm in a mood this evening. |
i don't mean the image that other people have of you.. it's more about the type of people that are in the group. i don't know if that makes sense.

The sorority that fits best for you will be the one that fits with your values and supports a philanthropy you agree with etc. |
I believe all of the national sororities have over (or at least very close) to over 100,000 initiates. If you can find 100,000 plus women over the course of 100 plus years that are all similar to eachother then you deserve a medal. If you find a sorority that doesn't have women that are "sort of the indy + geeky + laid back crowd" in its national membership then I'm guessing you didn't look hard enough.
My point: Chapters vary from campus to campus and from year to year. If you want to bring a sorority to campus contact the Greek Life office to find out what steps to take. Good Luck! |
Our particular chapter is full of diverse women and I think that's what makes us so great and different from all the rest of the chapters we have on campus. If I were you I'd go for the local sorority thing, because I think it would attract a lot of girls that are looking for a sorority but one that's different :)

Is your campus open to a new sorority? Why do you want to start a new sorority over joining an existing one?
Every sorority has girls that are all different from each other, it's very hard for me to imagine you not being able to find a single house on campus to fit into. |
