The Owl Mascot
I have a question. I got into an argument with my friend who was a KKG, because she said that their mascot was the owl. I said that it was the fleur-de-lis. When we looked it up on their national website, sure enough the owl is one of their mascots. My question is, is it common for KKG chapters to use the owl mascot, even when there are Chi O chapters at the same school?

I was just wondering about it, because they said that they have owl pals too.

I'm sure that a Kappa can come in here and enlighten us further, but they do indeed use the owl because it's a symbol of Minerva, their patron goddess. On all 3 campuses that I've worked with Greeks on, Kappas used the owl--they wore the same owl lavalier that the Chi Os did, for instance.

As a KKG, I can tell you that YES we do use the owl as one of our symbols.
Our badge is the golden key Our flower is the fleur-de-lis Our jewel is the sapphire Our colors are blue and blue Our mascot is the owl Our "patron goddess" is Minerva Carnation is correct--we use the owl because the owl is Minerva's familiar animal--you know, the goddess of wisdom and the wise old owl... Hope that clears things up! ------------------ Oh, Kappa Kappa Kappa Gamma, I'm so happy that I am a Kappa Kappa Kappa Gamma, Nobody knows . . . how happy I am! |
At LSU, I've never seen a KKG wearing a lavalier with letters. They all have Fleur-de-Lis jewelry http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I think you will find that several GLO's will have symbol or mascot "overlap"...
for example: Chi Omega and KKG both have owls. Tri Delta and Theta both have pansies. DG and AST both have anchors. ADPi and Phi Mu both have lions... and so on! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif [This message has been edited by CutiePie2000 (edited August 21, 2001).] |
