Rant: Crazy/obnoxious people in libraries and computer labs

It amazes me every time I go to the campus library and computer labs, there's always some tard disturbing our peace. How can you be twentysomething and not understand how to behave appropiately in quiet environments.

I witness people talking on their cell phones and yelling their computers everyday.

Right now, across the lab there's a girl cursing out her boyfriend on her cell phone. There's a guy two puters down yelling at the screen. He also just slammed his book and fist down on the table.

ETA: Three people within minutes told the girl to shut up, a student and two IT people. That fool is still talking. Oh oh, the po po just escorted her out!

Haha, my university's lj community has just leaked out into GC! Seriously, there are so many posts about this there. You could make a drinking game from it!

If you even try to use a cell phone at my law school's library, someone is there in moments to tell you not to use it. They do a good job of keeping things quiet, although that wasn't always the case at my undergrad.

When I was in school it wasn't unusual to see people on their cells in the library. Although I was usually more in aw that they got service than annoyed at the call. If you've been to UCSD you know that it's somehow a black hole of cell service. My dad smartly explained it's primarily due to the fact that to west you've got ocean, ocean and more ocean. So where do you think the cell towers are going to be placed? I always blamed the architecture of all the cement slab buildings.

Good lord, I hated people who wouldn't shut up in computer labs, etc. If they weren't yakking into a phone, their buddy was sitting beside them talking to them. As for people in stores, restaurants, etc., if you're going to talk on a phone go outside or at least use your indoor voice. I have a cell but I generally don't have loud conversations on it in public.

People who are not on construction sites who are using Nextels should be shot on sight.

Is it okay if you're in an ambulance? :P

Depends on if the patient is conscious. Those conversations too often go like this:

*chirp* HELLO!?
*chirp* NO, I'M JUST IN LINE AT THE GROCERY STORE/LIBRARY/COMPUTER LAB
*chirp* I'M STILL WAITING ON THE TEST RESULTS
*chirp* YEAH BUT DID YOU SEE THOSE SORES?
*chirp* GOD SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST STARING AT ME. THAT'S SO RUDE!

Ok, so maybe not quite that bad, but why do you shout into the phone!

That is very true.

Same thing at SFSU... the whole freakin' place is a black hole for cells... there's NO RECEPTION... never thought about the lack of towers in the ocean like a mile away...makes sense BUT... when I'm sitting on the beach... I get reception just fine... so i still say it's the buildings. :)

That was my thought too but it's too hard to argue the logic. Plus, he's a senior systems engineer that specializes in communication systems so I really didn't have a leg to stand on. :D

I don't know how people talk on the phone where I work (a public libarary), because I can't get a reception. And they not are suppose to talk on the phone. A lot of people are nice about it but some also ignore you.

Also, in the college library, you don't have to deal with fussy kids or crying babies.

My school library has a no cell phone policy. About a month ago, some guy was in there in, answered his cell phone, said he'd call the person right back. The librarian on duty got upset by this, and called the campus safety officers to handle the situation....yes,she really did call in the cops to deal with some guy answering his cell phone in the library. Anyways, the cop actually chase this guy around the library, and when it gets outside, the guy's coach sees the the whole thing and tried to restrain the guy. Mr. Campus Safety Officer pulls out his mace and uses it against both Mr. Cell Phone and Mr. Football Coach. Needless to say, this caused some controversy on campus.

I wish my school was more like yours. People treat the group study rooms like an extension of the student lounge. The door slamming is the best, because it happens about once every 30 seconds. Why the doors have to be really heavy and spring loaded, I have no idea. Two people will sit in the individual study rooms and talk, and everyone in the surrounding rooms can hear their conversations. Even on the "ultra quiet/no cell phone" floor, people will have their cell phones vibrate, then they run into the stairwell, open and slam the door, and talk in a normal voice right next to the door, which echos throughout the stairwell - which everyone near the stairwell can hear. I guess considering a lot of these people never went to the library in undergrad, they have no idea how to act in one.

I pretty much hate my library and the inconsiderate people at my school, if you couldn't tell. Don't even get me started on how it closes at 10 on Fridays and 7 on Saturdays, and it keeps this schedule until reading days.

I dare you to make noise in the quiet study room of the med school library. A special breed of med students study in there, and those people will kill you. Dead.
