It's great that you have an idea of what sorority you would like to rush. As a freshman I knew the names and a few girls in them, but didn't know a thing about them and even that recommendations could be done.

First off, don't single out your choices before you get through the door of every house. I know that is what I did, and I was lucky I got what I wanted. I know of others who weren't so fortunate.
But to the question at hand...
Recommendations help a girl get noticed. Think of how many women will be going through Recruitment. Sometimes all a chapter has to go off of is what you list as previous high school activities and a picture to place a name with a face. That's it. Yes, a GPA can speak a lot about intelligence, but it can be totally off with personality. Likewise, extra activities can say a lot about time management, but that doesn't mean that because a person listed an activity they were necessarily very involved in it.
Recommendations from former sister, help set a girl a part from the rest. It helps to highlight her assets. Because an alumna isn't going to write good things about another person just because. She will write them because she thinks you have done a lot of good things and she wants that chapter to take EXTRA notice of you. I'm not saying all girls who have recommendations get into any sorority. It just doesn't happen. Just like not all legacies get into their mother or sister's chapter.
Now I am not sure if your school is one in which a recommendation is very important or not. Like I said, I never had one. I just listed all my activities, knew a few girls in the chapter who had gone to my high school, and just acted like myself.
SO I encourage you to do the same. It's kinda like a relationship. You are also a prize to be won. So put your best foot forward but be yourself. Your shining personality will come through and they will love you for who you are...where ever that is.
Hope that all makes sense.

I had zero, nada, zip recs for Chi Omega. Being so clueless about rush- I did not even think about it.

Heather - just go into recruitment and be yourself. I know that is such a "staple" statement but trust me - it works!

I have a feeling that you are exceptional for any organization- you go thru- let all of us know how you are doing- but be yourself, be down to earth, and you will find your home and sisters who will be there for you no matter what! I have sisters who I knew 15 years ago in college - and I still get emails today from them.

Let us know - from Greek Chat- I have learned- there is a great sisterhood here!

Take Care!

Sue

Don't worry, I was working for a company and a Susie M_____ called and placed an order- I totally thought that my friends set it up because she said she was from Fairfield, California and I was from Fairfield, Connecticut. Little did I know- it was all true-someone in California had my exact name and city! We all have our twins!
