Foreign TV shows and movies
If you watch, what do you watch? My parents subscribe to Fairchild TV, which is a digital (mostly) Cantonese TV channel in Canada. It carries a lot of the shows that air in Hong Kong. Most of the shows are kind of silly (period dramas with charcters acting like they're in 2006...you know, ditzy girls and stuff like that), at least those that I've seen.

One of the network channels here carry shows from TBS Japan -- mostly J-Dramas that have 20-25 episodes each. The channel also has Soko Ga Shiritai, a show that features Japan's many different delights. It's very similar to the Nippon Golden Network, except KIKU airs from 6-11pm and you don't have to pay for it.
My mom's addicted to the local Korean station -- KBFD. It's Korean programming 24/7 and their dramas are very, very popular...so popular that the Entertainment section of the local newspaper has a section dedicated to K-Dramas every Sunday! |
Ooooh, I love my Footballers Wive$!!! The English do drama so much better than we do, for some reason...

I'm sure if you saw some of my entertainment posts about shows you'd notice that almost all of them are British shows, with the odd American one (but that's not really foreign is it).
Short List of British shows I watch (or own DVDs of): Yes Minister, Yes Primeminister (an oldy put a goody about politics) Torchwood Doctor Who Rome Spooks Battlestar Galactica (mini-series and first season were Brit) Blackadder Brit Movies: hello, anything by Stanley Kubrick - one of the best (in my mind) Vietnam flicks was filmed entirely in Britain - Full Metal Jacket. |
I watched the Young Ones, still do when I catch it
The Seventh Seal is Swedish, and is easily in the top three movies ever made. It's set after the crusades/during the plauge. Watch it, pay attention, and tell me it doesn't make you think about things, because it will. I like Japanese animes, some of them. Not most. Actually, I don't like anime. I like Full-Metal Alchemist and sometimes Ghost in Shell. Korean dramas are crazy. I had no sub titles so didn't watch long. |
I speak French so I watch French movies sometimes.

We watch quite a bit of Spanish TV in my house. My daughter watches Dora the Explorer in both the Spanish-heavy and English-heavy versions, and Plaza Sesamo.
I love foreign language films. Life is Beautiful, Maria Full of Grace, etc...were wonderful (just as a couple off the top of my head). It's also interesting to put on the subtitles/language tracks on English movies. I can always tell when the subtitle person was not the one who translated the dubbed soundtrack, because one will be more literally translated, and the other will try to stay more true to the intention of the story. |
Some of my favorite movies are in other languages.
Life is Beautiful, Y tu Mama Tambien. Km. 0 - Set in Madrid, it circles around people who all plan on meeting other people at Kilometer O, the center of Madrid. It's actually very funny with mixed up identities and chance meetings of strangers. Saving Face - This is actually an American movie, but much of the dialogue is in one of the Chinese languages - Mandarin, I think. One of my favorite shows of all times is "Coupling" from Britain. The 2nd season is hilarious. |
Lola Rennt macht spaz, es gefallt mir sehr fur nen Film

Well I know you all knew I would post here. I absolutely hate American soaps but I love Australian and UK soaps. Usually I go back to England, get caught up on the latest in Neighbours and Eastenders and then fly back home here again. So sad.
I really love Doctor Who (when I remember to watch!) and Little Britain. And I really want a remote control Dalek. I have to agree, Brits do drama much better than Americans, but I'm pretty sure it's the deadpan humour and Watershed law. After 9pm in the UK, basically anything goes in terms of TV. Before 9pm, not so much. So we don't have censors censoring the hell out of every show and rating it like in the US. This could be one good reason for it. For foreign films, I loved Amalie and some of the films that come out of Asia such as Hero and Ong Bak. But then I am a martial arts fan girl and Tony Jaa is amazing. |
The British tv shows I watch are mostly older:
Keeping Up Appearances Waiting for God Good German movies: Europa, Europa The Nasty Girl Schultzie Gets the Blues |
^^ Yes! Someone else who loves Little Britain! And Doctor Who (I admit I'm a wee bit of a dork, but it must also be mentioned that David Tennant is a fittie).
My favourite character from Little Britain is crazy Ann, the "Eh-eh-ehhhhhhhh" lady. So funny to see David Walliams in a pink nightgown and cardigan. Also Vicky Pollard is sooo like some of the chav-tastic 15 year olds here it's scary: "But yer, but no, but yer, but you don't know nuffink so shut up!" :D Other favourites include: Father Ted (it's a classic), the BBC version of Casanova (much better than the Heath Ledger film version), and Green Wing (a quasi-Scrubs-like comedy which is hilarious!). My foreign film tastes are very eclectic, though they lean mostly toward the French (or French speaking) - Amelie and Jesus de Montreal being two of my favs. |

But yeah, I have to admit their acting is silly too! :p |

I haven't seen the new season of Dr. Who yet, but I think Christopher Eccleston is a bit of all right meself. I have to mention that I finally made it to Madame Tussauds when I went over at christmas and my favourite photo of the lot is me standing with Lou and Andy. Then the poli sci nerd in me rocked out when I took pictures with a lot of famous world leaders. Word. |
I can't believe I forgot Father Ted.... being Catholic the comedy in that show reaches unheard of heights for me :D
