Looking to Relocate to NC

I am looking to relocate to NC, I need job info please. any places that are a definate that i should apply with? Any ideas greatly appreciated. I have a degree in Sociology. I am open to any career ideas

I think you are going to have to be more specific. Where in NC? What do you want to do? What have you done in the past?

My bad, I am interested in moving in or near Charlotte area. As said before, I have a degree in Sociology. Right now I am a counselor working with Developmentally Challenged adults in a vocational center. While in school I worked catering, after graduating I was a catering director for a while. Also while in school I worked in the Art department in my school as an office administrator. I worked a temp job as a case worker for FEMA after the hurricanes. In earlier years I worked for Montgomery Wards as a Team Leader for four years until they closed. So as you all can see I have a vast amount of experience in different things and love to explore different things. As you can also see I am not a job hopper, the only job I have held for less than a few years was a temp position. As said before I am looking for a career move and not just a job. Any ideas? Are there any different sites I can look at? What hospitals? Social Service agencies?

I have a friend that works in the Social Services field in NC, and they are extremely low paying jobs. You would be lucky to make $10 an hour. You can't get a job there as a social worker because they require a Masters degree.

Since most of your work experience seems to be in retail, I would try clothing companies because you could easily get a job as a manager, and would make more than you could in the mental healthcare field.

Since you have admin experience, I would recommend checking out CEO, mobius search, and Ambassador Personnel temp services. I've had a good experience with all of them, and I found my current position as an office manager/accountant for a plumbing company through Ambassador. Also, Careerbuilder.com is the job listing site of choice for the Charlotte job market. You can try monster.com and whatever else, but you'll find 80% of what you're looking for on Careerbuilder.com, because they're partnered with the Charlotte Observer. Good luck looking.

I would recommend you get to a job counselor so that you can zero in on exactly what you want to do. Once you know, you can fashion your resume accordingly and start your search.

I don't know that the job opportunities are that much bigger or better in the Charlotte area than they are in the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and environs). Remember that projections are that Raleigh will be larger than Charlotte in about 10 more years.

And state government in Raleigh might have social services opportunities not found elsewhere.

I read the response about making $10 an hour, hell to the naw, I make $15 doing what I do and thats not alot. Thank you all for your responses. I will try them all. any other ideas please post

Interesting. I have no first hand experience, but the job market in the Triangle has appeared to be very good. Perhaps it's a matter of the kind of job one is looking for.

And I must admit bias -- I really don't think I could be paid enough money to live in Charlotte. No offense to you and AlphaFrog (who undoubtedly make Charlotte a better place), but I've just never liked Charlotte at all. I know lots and lots of people love Charlotte, but I've never been one of them. Colors my view, perhaps.

Which is why there's more than one place to live in the world, I guess. :)

A little trick...

Work in Charlotte and live in SC... It's not much longer of a drive (particularly Fort Mill) but cost of living is tons lower.

As far as where to look, another place is the United Way Charlotte website and idealist.org. I'm in nonprofit, and those usually list decent jobs. I'm not very familiar with your field, unfortunately, but nonprofits are almost always hiring somewhere. :-)

I know that this is not specific to Charlotte - but its an idea. Seems to be kind of close to what you are doing now, but if want a career change you may not like.

Try looking at the area governments and see if they have a work program for the challegened in your area. Two of my cousins actually do this. One is a director in one county and the other one (who is younger) goes with them to jobsites.

They take various clients to work at jobsites and monitor and help them with what they need. It gives them skills, something to do, and is helpful to the community.

Maybe some jurisdictions in Charlotte have programs like this. Just a thought.

Look at Crisis Assistance Ministry, too... I don't know if they're hiring right now, but they have a lot of social services people, and usually have an opening somewhere.

definitely look into state government, i have 2 friends who do not have masters but have been working in professional positions with the court system & juveniles.

be aware that there might be months between applying, interviewing, and eventually being offered a position.
