Phi Mu - Oklahoma

Unfortunately OU is loosing another NPC group. :(

Phi Mu Sorority’s national organization decided it will suspend operations of its Epsilon Beta chapter at OU because of insufficient membership.

Heather Stephenson, Phi Mu president and religious studies and political science senior, said chapter members strongly opposed the decision and worked with their national organization in an effort to keep the chapter open.

“This was a difficult decision for our national organization and one that has come as quite a shock to our members as well,” Stephenson said. “But we are confident in the support that the University of Oklahoma and Panhellenic system will provide during this transition.”

Katie den Daas, Panhellenic president and journalism senior, said the Panhellenic Association is going to do everything it can to make sure the Phi Mus have a great last semester.

“It is really sad that they are leaving because they were a valuable part of our community,” den Daas said.

Stephenson said Phi Mu will stay active through the remainder of the school year and is committed to involvement in all OU, Panhellenic and community events.

“This is a difficult time for Phi Mu,” said Amy Fregara, psychology senior and member since 2002. “As sisters, we’ll stick together and make the most of this by enjoying our time together.”

Stephenson said when the chapter ceases its operations in May, all active members will become alumni. The new members will be initiated this November along with their house mom, Pam O’Neill.

“I’m honored to have been their house mom and be involved with all the wonderful things they have accomplished,” O’Neill said.

O’Neill said she has enjoyed her years at Phi Mu and is proud of the girls.

“Phi Mu has a strong history, that combined with the memories I’ve made here will keep me connected to my sisters for a lifetime,” said Danielle Porter, elementary education senior and member since 2002.

They will continue to hold their annual philanthropy events, Miracle on College Avenue in December and Field of Dreams in April.

“My sisters and I are proud of all of our accomplishments and plan to make this our most memorable year yet,” Stephenson said. “We’re definitely going to leave our legacy with style.”

Den Daas said there will be no new chapter coming to OU any time soon, and there are no plans for the Phi Mu house at this time.

“Phi Mu is the best example of sisterhood our Panhellenic system has,” den Daas said.

Very sad to hear. Didn't Alpha Phi re-colonize this year? Did that hurt Phi Mu?

Yes Alpha Phi returned to campus, but only participated in the 1st round of formal recruitment. Our colony has over 100 members right now, and actually just had their Walkout retreat this weekend. (a traditional Sooner sorority retreat)

I don't want to speak directly about Phi Mu because I do not know a lot about their situation. I wish the ladies of Phi Mu every success in the remainder of their semester.

Wait, does this mean their house mom is AI-ing? Ha! (no that wasn't a derisive 'omg AI sucks' laugh, I just thought it amusing).

Phi Mu has been struggling at OU for a while. I wouldn't say that the Alpha Phi recolonization hurt them because I think the damage was already done, if you know what I mean. Interestingly, when Alpha Phi closed in 1998, it was Phi Mu who re-colonized that year.

They have an amazing house. Whoever picks it up will get a good one.

hmm. Its a decent house. Which they were renting from ZTA. The house they were in before that they were renting from Alpha Phi.

I would have to say the Alpha Omicron Pi colonization in 2002 hurt them more. But too be honest they were a sinking ship. Oklahoma is a rough campus to be a struggling/up and coming organization. The few girls i know in Phi Mu were all really nice girls. But hopefully in a few years they can come back strong and make a dent and stick around like AOPi seems to be doing.
