Star Trek XI

So I was pretty surprised while searching the official Star Trek site (I was looking for an episode synapsis) when I saw a link with the new teaser poster for the next Star Trek movie.

I'm kind of surprised because I remember when Nemesis came out the producers said they would only do another Star Trek movie (not just TNG, but in general) if Nemesis did well. The movie did well but it wasn't number one of the opening weekend (Maid in Manhattan was actually number 1 and Nemesis was number 2 and the difference between the two was only like 1-2 million which isn't to bad considering the difference between 1 & 2 are usually much more).

Here's what the poster looks like:

Based on the poster I'm kind of thinking it might be a non-TNG/Enterprise/Voyager movie. But who knows.

Here's a bit of the article:

A picture, even a mere image that hints at a broader picture, can instantly give you a snapshot of things to come.
The production team that now holds the creative reins for the next Star Trek movie project has released a piece of artwork this weekend (to coincide with Comic-Con) that provides a Polaroid of an era past, as well as a vision yet to be revealed. With this familiar imagery, the direction of the next movie is now officially open to speculation.

J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof are the film's producers; Bryan Burk, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are executive producers. The film is slated for release in 2008.

Thoughts?

It's the franchise that wouldn't die! (Not to be confused with CSI, which hasn't branched out into movies yet, and I'll shut up before I start giving them ideas.)

I like Star Trek - heck, I even took a class on it in college - but enough is enough, people.

You never know with Jerry Bruckheimer (on branching CSI out to movies) especially since this is most likely the last season of CSI:LV.

How fun to take a Star Trek class in college. I don't think ASU ever offered fun classes like that (but then again being strictly a History major I rarely checked out the offerings of other courses, kicking myself in the tooshie now. LOL).

I took a SciFi class but it was English and no Star Trek :p

I think the movies is supposed to be a prequel, Notice the old school insignia and the Kirk/Spock colors. I'm not as into ST as I used to be, but I LOVE me some Firefly/Serenity :D And I need to get into Battlestar Galactica.. in my spare time.

I love Star Trek - it was a thing my dad and I did together. I was a TNG fan. I thought Nemesis was great to end on. It's not necessary to do another movie.

Star Trek: TOS was the first science fiction show I watched. My father introduced me to it when I was about 6. From there, it was all downhill...

How awesome to have classes on Star Trek and sci-fi in general. I'm surprised MIT didn't offer such classes... they'd be very oversubscribed. Haha, they'd probably degenerate into arguments over warp field dynamics. :p

The poster would seem to indicate that the new movie would be set in the TOS timeframe. Which makes me curious as to what they'd do, as so many of the TOS actors have passed on.

<- is also a nerd :)

I would think that it's ST:Enterprise. Is Scott Bakula doing anything else right now? I'm concerned that J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof will neglect Lost while focusing on Star Trek.

Word on the street was sort of a Starfleet Academy deal.. Young Kirk/Spock/etc... I dunno how well that will go over though.

i doubt it will go over very well. I told my mom about this new movie and she's thrilled. She's a MEGA Star Trek junkie, but I know she will not be happy if they use other actors instead of the "original" ones.

ESPECIALLY if they do something w/ Jean Luc Picard or even Spock and not use Patrick Stewart or Leonard Nemoy.

I always thought that would make a good series-- "Starfleet Academy." I really liked the storylines (I think there were two or three) on STNG where they were based on the Academy. I'm not so sure I would want to see a young Kirk and Spock though... particularly in a movie. I'll keep an open mind and see what they come up with.

My dad heard that it was supposed to be about the Enterprise crew (so after first contact and pre-Kirk. So we shall see.

My dad is hoping it is the latter because the way the Enterprise series ended (which wasn't a good ending at all. It was pretty craptastic)

I agree with you 110%.
