Small plane crashes into building

Breaking news: In the upper east side of Manhattan, a small aviation plane (recently confirmed by the FAA) crashed into a residential building. It still hasnt been confirmed whether or not it's a terrorist attack or an accident.

this is terrible :(

We're following this at my office now. The FAA is saying that it looks like an accident, but they're sending fighter planes over several U.S. cities as a precaution.

Oh yeah, pretend you didn't hear about it from the chica in the Midwest :p

This just puts everyone on edge although it's a very small plan and almost certainly an accident. The biggest issues is whether the people trapped inside the apartment building can get out.

I just heard from a coworker that Manhattan is "locked" and no one is allowed to leave. Anyone know if this is true or not?

Nothing on any of the local stations about that, only the area around building itself. All airports open and operating as normal for NYC with rain in area.

The stock market went down about 75 points on first news.

And so far terrorism as been knocked down the list several pegs but everything else is wide open. As for the first 30 minutes or so, everyone I saw or spoke to reaction was "OMG, not again."

Still conflicting reports over if it was a small fixed wing or helecopter.

Last I heard, the FDR Drive exits on 63rd & 72nd Streets are closed as is the 59th St. Bridge.

The plane was owned by a Yankee pitcher, Cory Lidle. No comment from the Yankees. They don't know if he was on board.

I heard so many sirens right before 3 pm that I had to turn on the tv to see what was happening. I swear I heard over 30 rescue vehicles pass my window. I'm fine.

That's good. :)

Do you know if public transportation is going to Queens?

aephi alum 10-11-2006 04:55 PM

Per the MTA website:

Quote:

Due to a building fire on E. 72nd Street, the M15 on 1st Avenue, the M72 / M30 on E. 72nd Street, the M31 on York Avenue, and the M66 on East 67/68th Streets are all experiencing reroutes and extensive delays at this time.
So you should be ok getting to Queens. Looks like Metro-North isn't affected either (whew!).

Thanks! I hope you're well also.

I just made a phone call, and the subway to Queens is running as usual. I don't know about the buses.

I guess aephialum covered the buses.

According to espn.com, he was killed in the crash.

The best friend who has to take Kaplan classes and then go home to Queens afterwards will be sad to hear because this means that classes aren't cancelled.
