date party? big/little?

i am a sophomore who will be rushing this year and i am clueless about sororities in general. i have read a lot of the forum but i have some questions.

1. how does the whole big/little thing work? i have heard that it starts out as a secret or something. if you come in as a sohomore, do you still get a big? and do you mix with people that are also sophomores in your chapter or do you usually hang out with the freshmen that are also new pledges? i am worried that i won't fit in with either group because i am rushing a year after most people do, and that i won't bond with my sorority or something. could you tell me about some of your experiences and how the different classes and pledge groups interacted?

2. what are date parties? how do you find a date for them? what if you don't really know anyone that well? do you just ask a random frat guy or do they usually ask you? what if you are too embarrassed to ask someone?

1. No matter what age you are, you will be assigned a Big. You can hang out with anyone you want to. 2 of my closest friends were in the pledge class below me.

2 & 3. You can go with a date, or you can go alone. Sometimes it's more fun to just go with a group of sisters, instead of worrying about a date.

As for it being a secret, usually you get "temporary" bigs (heart sis for example) for the new member period. Shortly before initiation, there's usually a big sis revealing, where, through creative and fun ways, you discover who your big sis is. Sometimes you get some input, sometimes the members pick, that depends on the chapter.

But either way, it's someone who's a sort of mentor for you. And makes sure you know about all the er, unofficial events that may be taking place on Friday night ;)

This varies by organization. We don't have temporaries at all. In fact, we don't have bigs/littles, we have sister-mothers and sister-daughters. You know who your sister-mother is when you attend the new member pinning ceremony and keep that one person your whole life. All 3 of my sister-daughters were rush crushes of mine and my sister-mother was the member I talked to most during recruitment and had really connected with. It doesn't matter what your grade level is. The sister-mother is a mentor.

That's cool too :) I know the "temporary" big is a common thing across NPCs, but I know not everyone does it!

Some chapters also still use pledge mom/daughter instead of big sis/little sis.

While we're asking questions, what's a rush crush?

A rush crush is someone that you meet during rush that you're basically "OMG I have to have her in the chapter!"
