What matters more?

Good morning!
I am a newbie in the GC world, but I recently was asked a question and figured you guys could give me the best answer!

Anyway, last Sunday I was speaking with the daughter of a friend. She is in high school and is beginning to consider where to go for college. We begain talking about greek life and she asked me a question that seemed simple, but the more I thought about it, the more complicated it became!
So here was her question-- What are you more loyal to, your college chapter or your national(international!) sorority?

I told her that when you first go through recruitment, it is the college chapter that brings you in. So in the begining it is the college chapter what holds your loyalty. However as you grow in the chapter, you meet others from other chapters (either online or in real life) and you notice bonds that go beyond your college chapter.

By this point, I felt like I was talking in circles! Anyone have any other (better) answers? Thanks!

I think I'm split between the two. I attended my first convention after my freshman year in NYC so that really allowed me to see how our organization works. I also got to meet lots of big whigs in AOII Land since I was a page for the International Parliamentarian that convention.

But aside from that, I think I will always cheer for my chapter when it comes to "competing" for awards against other AOII chapters. However, some of my really good friends are AOII’s from other chapters and they are older and younger than me.

I think it is really a tie for me when it comes to who I am more loyal to; I think overall my love for AOII grows each year whether it is for my chapter or the entire organization as a whole.

It just depends on where you are in your AOII life and your activity level. It doesn’t have to be an either or but it winds up that way occasionally. Right now, it’s about international and our big picture. I do care deeply about my alumnae and collegiate chapters and I will always root for them to be first. However, most of my good AOII sister-friends are not from either one.

Ditto. I think about it this way, you're in your collegiate chapter for 3-4 years, but you're an alumna for the rest of your life. For me, it's more about personal connections I've made through my AOII experiences, and I've been lucky enough to experience these locally and Internationally. I remain loyal to my own collegiate chapter, yet I will always have a place in my heart for each of the collegiate chapters I've been associated with as an alumna.

I don't know which I'm more loyal to. I guess I'm more loyal to my chapter because I don't really know many other AOII's from other schools, maybe one or two. I want to go to conventions and things like that to meet other AOIIs, I think that would be really fun.

I think if it's done right, you end up more loyal to the (inter)national organization. I was very loyal to my chapter in college, but I remember always hearing that we were part of a bigger thing, and I really liked that. Now that I've been an alumna for almost 4 times as long as I was a collegian, I think I would rather everyone be more loyal to the organization as a whole. Yes, it is the individual chapter where you make your "connection". It's necessary to the continuance of the organization. But at some point, in order to remain viable, everyone must shift their loyalties to the bigger group.

Think about this - how comfortable would you be with the executive board if you knew that their first loyalty was to their chapter of initiation and NOT to Alpha Omicron Pi?

Something to think about when we look at where we are going and how we have so many "lost" sisters out there.
