Text Messaging Your Order Gets You Your Food Faster

I saw this segment on Good Morning America this morning. Intriguing. I called in my order for dinner last night as I drove home. But I doubt I would text a message for coffee (if I drank it).

Excerpt:

Sept. 20, 2006 — It used to be your mother told you butting in line was not polite.

Now a growing number of soccer moms and other adults on the run have found a hi-tech way to jump to the head of the line.

Using their cell phones, they're now texting their orders to fast-food restaurants to buy what they would typically have to wait in line to purchase.

So now, for example, when they arrive at their neighborhood Dunkin' Donuts, their coffee is waiting for them, not the other way around.

Monica Schaffer, of Diversified Media Design, promotes Gomobo.com, the company that makes this happen. Not surprisingly, she uses the technology herself.

"It is such a time saver," Schaffer said. "One push and send and it's gone. And I can walk to Dunkin' Donuts and pick it up. It's a no-brainer."

Here's the time-consuming part.

Customers have to first sign up at Gomobo.com. They give their credit card number and they enter their favorite choices at say, participating Subway shops or Dunkin' Donuts locations.

Once they enter that information, they're ready to go. They simply text message the franchise directly, enter a code and the business transaction takes place over the cell phone. And your fast food is ready faster than you can get there.

"The real advantage is that both ordering and payment are done in one text message," said Noah Glass, the 25-year-old founder of Gomobo.com. "And with one button, the business sends a text message back with the exact time the order will be ready. The customer knows exactly when to show up."

Is this something you would sign up for?

since i'm a fatty, HECK YEAH. checking that website right now.

nevr mind, not available in my area. but i am a HUGE fan of ordering in advance. Chipotle lets you fax in orders, i order pizza online at work and it's delivered RIGHT as i'm coming home in the evening, and my bf swears by outback / applebees carside takeout service.

services like gomobo are a great idea since it sounds like 1 "provider" for a variety of restaruants / fast food places.

I don't care who you are and what you do...nothing is going to get you through The Coop faster on Friday afternoons. CT4 - you know what I'm sayin...;)

Honestly I have never been to The Coop. Is this the same as Chicken Coop? LOL

I thought about you yesterday as I drove through the South End on South Blvd with the orange cones and ripped up road. It was my first time on that part of South Blvd in forever.

Price's Chicken Coop.

Our office is right off of South Blvd....and if we have to go anywhere, we take Old Pville or Tryon. South Blvd is NOT worth it...and is going to be WORSE when it has a damn lightrail running through the middle of it.

Let's discuss how South Blvd, is in fact, not a boulevard, except for a very short stretch near I-485 (and the part where the new light-rail doesn't count either, as it's a freaking mess, and impassable most of the time anyway). It is, however, a four lane road, on which people frequently STOP in the left lane DURING RUSH HOUR to attempt to make a left turn across two lanes of solid traffic going the other direction. People, it's not going to happen. Go to the next light down and turn around, instead of backing up RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC for 18.563 miles.

Thank you,

Person who already has a 45-min drive without your dumb asses being stupid.

Not to hijack, but when did they put in the lightrail? I swear I leave and all these things happen...South Park gets a Crate and Barrel....

It's In Progress. And here's a shocker...it's over budget. They talk about it EVERY day on the news. Like a city project going over budget is actually news....

LOL!! Yeah it is over millions of dollars in budget. I am off of Tyvola at work near the old Coliseum and usually take South Blvd near Woodlawn and to the right but yesterday I came South Blvd from downtown and   a mess and a 1/2.

Oh and Price's Chicken Coop is the one I thought you meant, lol, but still have never eaten there after 4 years of living here.

Get out of Charlotte. You can't live here if you've never eaten at The Coop. It's a rule. Check with the Chamber of Commerce.:p

LOL! I think my old job served us either Chicken Box or Chicken Coop a couple of times.

And to put the thread back on top so us Charlotteans don't totally take over, the Go Mobo people are saying soon we will be able to hail cabs and make bank transactions via text messaging. Hail a cab would be great for NYCers and Chicagoans primarily.

I'm not surprised. Nah, I don't think this is something I would sign up for. I dislike it that almost everyone in this country thinks they're too cool to wait, especially those darn soccer moms.

Dionysus 09-21-2006 04:42 PM

Who would eat at a chicken place with the word "coop" in its name? It's like eating at a BBQ place called "Pigpen". Oh wait...there really is a place called that. :o

neosoul 09-21-2006 04:45 PM

and this is reason #17 why I need a side kick

orighu 09-21-2006 06:39 PM

i'd do it.... i'm the poster child right now for curb side to go.... i leave work - go through the menu's in my car - decide what to order, get buy in from the kid and husband and call in the order.... not having to wait on hold would be just an extra perk............
