Sororities As Historic Sites
 

Sorority locations are being recognized as historic sites. At Rhodes (in Memphis) four sorority buildings are being added to the National Register of Historic Places as “examples of the collegiate gothic style.” The buildings are homes to Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, and Kappa Delta. In Indiana, at DePauw, the state Historical Bureau “will note the foundation of America's first Greek-letter fraternity for women on the DePauw University campus by placing a state historical marker at the Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta.” Then dedication ceremony for the marker will be on October 7. The Thomas-Carithers House was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey (GA-1131), is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (May 8, 1979), and has been locally designated as a Historic Landmark (January 8, 1991

The AOII house at the University of Illinois is also on the National Register of Historic Places. I believe the AOII house at Cal-Berkeley is also.

once they are on the register, do they get funding to preserve the buildings? how were they before being added... at UF there are some super old buildings.

The FIJI house at Texas is a nationally recognized historical site. (pretty sure its national, but it may be just a Texas landmark. Either way, pretty cool.)

In April 1995, 100 years after the founding of Chi Omega at the University of Arkansas, the chapter house was accepted for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

As a matter of fact it makes life very difficult if you are renovating, or doing other life/safety upgrades.

You can possibly get tax benefits for certain things, but since most are non-profits anyway, its irrelevant.

I think the Kappa Kappa Gamma house is also one. I don't remember for sure. Macallan25, maybe you know.

Many up here in Toronto are recognized as historic buildings... and it is a bit of mixed blessing - yes there can be some extra funding when something structural needs to be repaired (as in the case of when one DKE's chimney's collapsed in a wind-storm); but being a historic building all upkeep, repairs, and construction has to be in accordance with various preservation codes.

A case in point is my sister's, at Gamma Phi Beta they can't add new outlets, or re-wire, as that would be structurally invasive... even little things can be a problem, such as cleaning - they can't clean the brick exterior themselves, they have to hire approved experts to do it...
