Two U. of Minnesota Fraternities on Probation
Delta Tau Delta HQ and the U. of Minnesota have placed the Delt chapter on probation, according to this article in the September 18, 2006 Minnesota Daily:
http://www.mndaily.com/articles/2006/09/18/69003 The FarmHouse fraternity chapter at Minnesota is also on probation, as the article notes. Brief excerpts: University officials and the Delta Tau Delta national organization have put the local fraternity on probation for the remainder of the academic year. . . . because of a July 16 event, in which a person was seriously injured at a party held by the fraternity. The 20-year-old victim . . . was hospitalized for injuries to his brain and was put into a coma for recovery. The status of the victim has not been released. . . . a membership review was conducted by the national organization, and several members were suspended from the fraternity. . . . Delta Tau Delta isn't the only fraternity to undergo disciplinary action in recent months. FarmHouse was suspended last spring for hazing their incoming recruits and will remain on probation for the remainder of the school year. . . . |
It sure would be nice to know more about the incident and the injury.
It dosen't make much sense to me that, the chapter president says no member was involved, but that some members were suspended. It also seems strange that what sounds like a life threatening injury is involved, but the chapter is only on probation. If anyone knows anything more about this, I'd like to hear the details. |
DeltAlum, I read your post and Google News'd to see if there was anything else. There sure is, but it seems to make things even murkier. Here's the address for a story on station WCCO's site:
http://wcco.com/topstories/local_story_261192814.html The quote from a vice president of the university makes it sounds almost like the school was using the incident as an excuse to "do something" to the chapter. Apparently no one has been charged for attacking the victim, and there's no hint that any members of the fraternity took part in the attack. Very odd. Thanks for giving me the incentive to find an update, even though it raises more questions instead of providing answers. |
Thanks.
You're right about making the situation murkier. In addition, the journalism needs some help as well. Since when are people quoted using their first names instead of their last or both? Sounds like the Delts allowed the wrong people into the house and the victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time as well. If nothing else, though, this should be a reminder to be careful who is allowed into a party or a chapter house. There have been a number of incidents reported in Risk Management where non members have started trouble at a party. |
I think that is why National Organizations are being very stiff about open parties being held without restrictions in place.
There have been at least 3 Chapters where rapes were said to have happened by non members and the chapters are closed.:( Chapters MUST police them selves or the school and or the National will. In this case, where is the Alum who should or could be helping out! |
