need advice- best friend's sister rushing
Here's my dilemma, my best friend's little sister is a freshman at college and is beginning to look at Greek Life. She has made some friends in sororities at her campus and wants to rush next semester. However, I know for a fact from friends that are in fraternities and sororities at her school that the sororities there haze pretty badly and some of them have been on probation for it. I really love this girl and I don't want to see her get hurt. Is there a way that I can discourage her from rushing or is this something that she has to learn for herself?

I would tell her that you have heard that some of the chapters haze, explain what hazing is, how to protect yourself from being a victim and let her make the choice.
|
Is there a chance that since they've been put on probation some of the hazing has let up? I agree with adpiucf and think that if you know of chapters that don't haze mention those as well.

how about you let her make the decision for herself, and know that she'll be better off for it anyways

Fore warned is fore armed.
It sounds like the school may tend toward locals as opposed to Nationals? True or false? |
False. 1 local fraternity and 1 local sorority. Lots of NPC and NIC groups.

There are nationals that haze, as sad as it is to admit it |

Damn notify IHQs that really sucks on the hazing and is stoopid! Be better if got straightended out and progress upward. |
Unless someone has first hand witnessed the hazing, they have no right to call an IHQ and "report" anything. The ensuing witch hunt is hugely unnecessary and a waste of time and resources. Unless you're at that campus and you have seen something in person that is defined as hazing according to that sorority's definition of hazing, you have no business calling them out on anything. And should they witness something, the first call to action is the campus Greek Life adviser.

I agree with adpiucf, warn her and let her make a choice. Honestly, I'd probably still encourage her to go through recruitment but tell her to high tail it out of there if there's any hazing activities that she's uncomfortable with.
