9/11/06----My Remembrance
FDNY Fire Code: 5-5-5-5 In Flanders Fields By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In 1918, inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields," Moina Michael replied with her own poem: We Shall Keep the Faith Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields, Sleep sweet - to rise anew! We caught the torch you threw And holding high, we keep the Faith With All who died. We cherish, too, the poppy red That grows on fields where valor led; It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies, But lends a lustre to the red Of the flower that blooms above the dead In Flanders Fields. And now the Torch and Poppy Red We wear in honor of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought In Flanders Fields. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To my friends and my Brothers, who now sit with Minerva-I Remember To the 2,800 plus 1-I Remember To those in the Pentagon-I Remember To the Flight Crews and Passengers of Flights AA 77, AA 11 and UA 175-I Remember To the Flight Crew and Passengers of Flight UA 93-I Remember To all the Uniformed workers-I Remember To the Armed Forces-I Remember To the Health care workers, who helped so much, and wanted and waited to give more, to do more-I Remember To the Tradesmen, who went in to search, recover, and to rebuild-I Remember To the Volunteers, from near and far, who dropped everything to help-I Remember To those who made it out-I Remember To those who did not come out-I Remember To all the Victims, the Hero's, Their families, their friends: You are, and always will be, Remembered You will never be forgotten We will never forget For those in the service of our Country-We have your six and hope for your safe return. Proudly you gathered, rank on rank, to war as who had heard God's message from afar; all you had hoped for, all you had, you gave, to save mankind — yourselves you scorned to save. Splendid you passed, the great surrender made; into the light that nevermore shall fade; deep your contentment in that blest abode, who wait the last clear trumpet-call of God. Long years ago, as earth lay dark and still, rose a loud cry upon a lonely hill, while in the frailty of our human clay, Christ, our Redeemer, passed the self-same way. Still stands his Cross from that dread hour to this, like some bright star above the dark abyss; still, through the veil, the Victor's pitying eyes look down to bless our lesser Calvaries. These were his servants, in his steps they trod, following through death the martyred Son of God: Victor, he rose; victorious too shall rise they who have drunk his cup of sacrifice. O risen Lord, O Shepherd of our dead, whose cross has bought them and whose staff has led, in glorious hope their proud and sorrowing land commits her children to thy gracious hand. John Stanhope Arkwright’s hymn “O Valiant Hearts”. FDNY Fire Code: 5-5-5-5 |

IMHO, rather large different in subject matters. The son of a so-called celebrity vs. a National/World Wide tragity (sp?). Did you even look at anything pass the first page? PM_Mama00-We all have our rights of OHO and POV. |

those cartoon were pretty right on |

I agree this is a day to remember those who lost their lives on that tragic day, and to remember the families and friends who have gone through so much heartbreak and pain over that time. However, I don't think that what PM_Mama did was at all offensive or wrong - she was just taking issue with a political cartoon. |

Jon- I didn't read any article or anything, didn't even read the whole thread. 9-11 is a VERY important day... more important to some than others. However, if this is such an important day for you and so sad, why are you on GC posting political cartoons? Why aren't you at one of the memorials or paying respect elsewhere? Just because someone posts a topic other than 9-11 today, it doesn't mean that person/people aren't thinking about it. And if 9-11 isn't the day to "start" something, then I don't wana see any posts by you on irrelevant topics on Memorial Day, Easter, Christmas, 4th of July, All Saints Day, D-Day, April 20th, or any other day that is as important to others as this day is to you. ETA: Ok I just looked at the cartoons, and saw a few respectful ones in the midst of dozens of political ones. Kinda childish and petty on a day that should be focused on remembering what happened and those who died/were injured, rather than pointing fingers and looking at political aspects. |

I'm not sure that it's right to say today is not a day for nitpicking. EVERY day is a day for critical thought, questioning and yes, nitpicking comes along for the ride.
Giving up critical thinking because of a tragedy leads to less independant thought. |

Today is the best day for critical thought. If you give up thinking critically about things, then the terrorists win.
