(09-04) 13:53 PDT -- Members of a UC Berkeley sorority were stunned early today when a young man knocked on their door, then suddenly collapsed and died from a gunshot wound.

Police said that the man, whose identity was not released, was apparently seeking help at Alpha Omicron Pi Sigma House, which was still well lit at 2:30 a.m. They have no motive for the crime and no suspects.

I assume that they mean the AOII house - Sigma chapter??
In any case, Berkeley (while prestigious) is in a bit of a freaky neighborhood. I feel a lil' nervous when I was there, walking from the BART to the campus.

Hmmm, I have to disagree with you on the immediate area of the Greek Row. That area is ok, it's once you go below Shattuck (by the BART station) it gets a little sketchy. Problem is, alot of the local homeless hang out on Telegraph Either they stay on the strip near campus (tourists= begging for $$) or they hang out on Shattuck (near Berkeley BART) The local business are chatting it up with the city council to take care of the problem. The vagrants are harrassing peeps and business' are losing money. Telegraph has already lost Codys books.

ETA The property value is really high around the campus so the folks that OWN property are fine, its the the vagrants and such that are the problem. They hang out and dont go anywhere.

This is really a shame. My heart goes out.

Have the detectives found out anything more on this case?

The thought of a shooting anywhere near a sorority house is scary to me. Does anyone know if Berkeley has police patrolling Sorority Row at night? We always had an on-duty officer in our parking lot after dark; it went a long way toward making us feel better about walking to our cars.

It is a very nice area of Berkeley and is patrolled regularly.

"Police are looking into reports that a man confronted Drummond outside Blakes [half mile away from the AOII house] brandishing a handgun and then shot him in the torso after a struggle. Drummond apparently managed to flee and either traveled to the sorority by foot or was dropped off there by a friend who may have panicked. Police said the sorority may have been chosen because it was well lit at 2:30 a.m."

LOL ever been to greek row at USC (So. Cal)? Most, if not all, of the sororities there have bars on their windows.

USC is in the GHETTO! I know several people who transferred out because they never felt safe on or near campus. :(

SMH, I'm guessing you only know what a ghetto is from watching gangsta movies.

SigKapSweetie 09-26-2006 08:21 AM

I guess I've never really been exposed to that. I went to school in Gainesville, so apart from the occasional serial killer, it's safe as houses.

Well, not every college town is as sleepy as Gainesville. A lot of colleges are in bona fide cities, and if they're older, are in older central parts of the city.

Thieves are attracted to college areas, in part because the kids are usually careless with their money and possessions.
