Folly Beach, SC... any thoughts?
 

So my hubby and I are going to take a vacation... finally. We are thinking the beach... Hilton Head was the original destination... but I want an oceanfront room... so Hilton Head is out... even the Holiday Inn is $200 a night.

So I found this beach called Folly Beach... anyone from the area know anything about this location? Is it good? I found a hotel... Holiday Inn that is all oceanfront views for less than 150 a night.

I've never been to this beach so if anyone has any advise on this beach or the area... please let me know. You are welcome to PM me!

Folly Beach (AKA The Edge of America) is about 20 miles outside of Charleston. There's not much to do there (besides going on the beach) but there are several little resturants in Folly Beach. As in terms of hotels, the most popular one is the Holiday Inn. Most people who visit there go to visit Charleston and the sites (The Battery, Waterfront Park, Aquarium, The Market, historic homes, etc).

It's a shame that fartty.net isn't up and running at the moment. The kids on that board could go on for hours about anything remotely related to Charleston.

Since we are old married people, we just want a relaxing vacation that will still let me get new furniture this year... so the Holiday Inn sounds like the prefect place.

We are going the last week of this month... wanting to get to the beach before the winter but after the summer crowds.

I'm looking for specific places to go... so if anyone has anything that is don't miss let me know. Also any places between Lexington and Charleston that are worth the stop also. I think that we are going to spend a night in Gatlingburg so any off the beaten track places for shopping or sight seeing would be helpful.

when i lived in NY we would go to charleston every summer, and every summer we would land at Folly. it is incredibly gorgeous and super relaxing. Isle of Palms is gorgeous too. You'll have a blast!!! :D

She's right, Florida gulf coast beaches are better. That being said, SC is nice because you don't have to hang out with Floridians. Its a toss up.

I love Folly too—it's true that the beach itself isn't as nice as those on the Gulf Coast, but it's not nearly as overdeveloped as Gulf Shores, Panama City, Fort Walton, etc. The Holliday Inn (2 L's) isn't fancy by any means, but it's clean, but you won't be staying in your motel room a lot anyway. Eat at Café Suzanne's while you're there. :)

I am looking forward to it. We went to MB last year and it was so over developed and crowded. The private islands are still out of our price range, so this seems like a nice beach town... not the crazy maga beach of Myrtle. I'll add Cafe Suzanne's to the list.

Not trying to change the subject, but HMD, seriously, if you're hangin out in PC, FWB, or Gulf Shores, thats your problem...Check out Seagrove, Grayton and Rosemary if you havent yet.

yeah, Gulf Shores and Panama City should be avoided.

Ah, Folly Beach! Let me be the first to make this thread somewhat relevant to Greek Chat.

My fraternity little brother and I got our very first (paid) playing gig on Folly Beach at a restaurant called The Sandbar. He and I sang and played guitars, which we had been doing in college in Florida. He lived in Charleston, so the first summer after I graduated I lived with him and his folks.

I can still smell the seafood as we muddled through such songs as "Summer Breeze", "A Horse With No Name", and "Blackbird" in the summer of 1976. Wow - that's 30 years ago now. In 2000 he and I finally cut our first CD.

Please let me know if The Sandbar is still there. It was owned by the Brinsons (a husband and wife). The food was great. Have a wonderful vacation!

I say if because my hubby being the stick in the mud is really set on Hilton Head... I really don't want HH. Not because it is bad or anything but because HH is over done... I like to take the road less traveled. Also with the new storm out at sea, we are still trying to figure out which course to go... Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico. I'll look at those gulf places... I grew up going to the gulf... From Orange Beach to Fort Walton.

The Sandbar is still open, but it's now called River Cafe.

I haven't been to Hilton Head in a few years, but from what I remember (and also being a SC native and Charleston resident), HH is pretty much beach, stores, hotels and golf courses. There may not be much in Folly Beach, but at least you're not far from Charleston and can be able to do "tourist" stuff.

Just got back from the beach... it was great! We started off going to Hilton Head for a few days. It was nice but out of my financial zone... dinner was really over priced. We eat at the Oyster Factory, The Salty Dog, and Marley's Island Grille... my favorite was Marley's great food, great sangria and great prices... Also the hotel wasn't bad (Holiday Inn on the beach) our hotel room looked out over the ocean.

Then on Wednesday, we packed up and headed for Folly Beach... it was a really cool town. I liked it. The beach and pier were nice. The hotel wasn't so great. It was on the beach and all the rooms overlooked the ocean... so that was nice. The rooms on the other hand, needed an update... big time! Also the pool wasn't all the great BUT you could see the ocean and the beach laying out on the pool deck...NICE! Also the beach here wasn't crowded and there were a lot of shells to search for. We only spent one night here, so we ate at The Crab Shack... it was great place to drink... food was okay. It was within walking distance of the hotel which is why we ate here. Sorry that we didn't make it to the River Cafe... that was the original destination but we really didn't want to drive any where.

On Thursday morning we got up and drove to Charleston and spent a few hours there... and then drove home. We missed our puppy, our TiVo and our own bed.

Over all I really liked Folly the best. I would love to get a beach house there or something again. Hilton Head just wasn't my cup of tea (my hubby liked it, though).
