Miami University (Ohio) - Zeta-Upsilon Zeta Colony Update
Brothers,
Good news to report. We are now an official colony! Last Monday we had an impressive AM Ceremony conducted by a team of IHQ and Alumni Brothers. Twelve outstanding men accepted our AM pin! We will have three more AMs shortly. The Colony members have drawn up a list of an additional 25 men that they will attempt to recruit in the next few weeks. This is an upperclass group of men. We have deferred rush that starts early next semester. They, with the help of IHQ, will mount a major recruitment drive at that time to add first year students to our roster! Our Grand High Alpha, Ed Leonard, was with us as well as some parents, Greek Affairs staff, girl friends, and most of our Alumni Board and ZUZAA Board of Directors. The AMs were presented with a large, handcrafted coat of arms as a gift from ZUZAA to our new Colony members. We had a Reception after the ceremony and had a chance to start building a personal relationship with these fine young men. Am I excited? You bet I am! Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond, Z-U Zeta |
Brother Raymond, congratulations to all of the New AMs and the revitilized Colony!
May they grow and prosper.:) In ZAX, |
I trust that Steve Dealph (a member of Phi-Xi @ Southern Indiana & Miami's Greek Life Coordinator) was helpful. He worked w/Alpha-Iota @ Northwestern & was instrumental in the chapter house getting a new front porch.
BTW, I'm in scenic & windy Normal, IL for Illinois State's Homecoming. I'll let you know how many AM paddles I have to sign this weekend. In ZAX, BF |
David Orr, ELC (Arkansas) just told me his home chapter took in 56 AMs this semester--that'll almost double the amount of members they have (114). On the other end of the spectrum is my alma mater, Illinois State. We've associated 15, but that's big news on this campus...

He is also helping me with the Greek Letter Society Museum idea that I am working on at Miami University. He is a good Brother! I will say "Hello" to him for you. Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond |

Thanks for Your Comment
Brother,
We did a Fall Rush which was restricted to upperclassmen only. We now have 14 AMs and will be pursuing 25 more potential AMs in the next few weeks. Our "big" Rush period begins next semester when we will be able to recruit First Year students. Our current upperclass group of AMs will be initiated at the end of this semester and will be the "core" group, along with IHQ staff and Alums, to conduct the traditional second semester Freshmen recruitment for us. We expect our numbers to be much higher at the end of the normal second semester rush period. So, our plan is to phase in our Colony's recruitment effort over two rush periods. We could have waited until second semester, but we knew that there were some excellent upperclassmen who did not join a fraternity last year. Basicly, we picked up men (with demonstrated leadership and academic skills) who will "jump start" our Colony recruitment. By the way, we are not convinced that a large number of members is necessarily a good thing. Of course, we want enough men to provide a great fraternal experience for our members. If that goal is reached by having 40 or 60 men in our Zeta that will be fine with us. Eventually, we would like to have an average of 50 to 60 men in our Chapter each year. Zeta-Upsilon initiated over 1200 men in roughly a 55 year period. We averaged about 22 men a year in the past. We will be happy with 15 or so new members a year from now on. We hope to have 40 to 60 members in our Zeta by the end of the second semester. Wish us luck.... Thanks for the observation. Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond, Z-U Zeta |
I think many Brothers have a good point.
Do not just recruit numbers, but quality men. Set a number to work with and they can learn from the few @15-20 who will be the core of a new colony or rebuilding Zeta. If the core is right, then the rebuilding will become much easier in getting more quality associates. Numbers may look good, but if they do not last where is the good? |
