Terrorist Attempt Stopped

I can't believe no one's posted this already!

Updated: 14 minutes ago
LONDON - British authorities said Thursday they had thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up several aircraft heading to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage, averting what police described as “mass murder on an unimaginable scale.” Meantime, a U.S. counterterrorism official called the plot "the real deal."

Story on MSN

Kinda scary.

I heard about it this morning while getting dressed. This plot has raised the level to red and will now prevent passengers from carrying liquids, including hair gel, on the planes. :(

What's scarier is that my friend is flying out this morning.

DeltAlum 08-10-2006 09:07 AM

Scary situation.

Those Brit intelligence types are pretty damned good.

I'm hoping that liquids are allowed back onto planes before we head to Mexico in October. It would SUCK SO BADLY to not be able to take my make-up, toothpaste, and sun-tan lotion. Although, I do confirm that it would suck even more to be blown-up mid-flight.

I'm pretty sure you can pack all that stuff in your checked luggage, just can't bring it carry-on.

Shampoo bottles explode though... zip them in plastic bags before you go!

DeltAlum 08-10-2006 10:04 AM

It's a little inconvenient, but I'll bet you can buy all of those things in Mexico if you can't take them along.

ThetaDancer 08-10-2006 11:10 AM

I'm flying out tonight and was hoping to just bring carry-on luggage since I'll only be gone for the weekend. Does anyone know where I can find out about the heightened security measures?

tunatartare 08-10-2006 11:14 AM

I would call the airport.

AGDee 08-10-2006 11:15 AM

My kids are making their first unaccompanied flight today, to Florida, to see their Grandpa. My ex-husband is freaking out. I think today will be the safest day to fly. They're checking everything so carefully.

CNN, etc. all have the heightened security info posted.

SydneyK 08-10-2006 11:16 AM

This is from the London Times, so I'd take it with a grain of salt (unless you're flying to London). Like KLPDaisy said, I'd call the airport. In the meantime, read this:

Here's the stuff from the TSA web site:

Thanks for the help with the heightened security info!

I fly out to NY tomorrow. I will severly miss my handcream and toothpaste. I better check the Air Canada website and see what their restrictions are.
