Alumni/Foundations

Hi All,

Would your chapter like to be profiled in an upcoming book?

I'm in the middle of researching a book on Alumni Greeks and the proper way for us to establish and run our Foundations.

I'm a Delta, the author is an AKA and together we're looking to interview several members of various groups and their chapters about how they are "functioning" and seperating the social aspects of the group from the non-profit aspects. The book will provide an in depth look at how your chapter can secure and maintain it's non-profit status, and what is expected by the IRS when it comes to our organizations.

If you are a member of a chapter with a Foundation that is:
1. Thriving
2. Struggling
3. Just Starting or Looking to Start

Send us an email, and your group may be profiled in the book and your chapter can receive up to 2 hours of free legal advice from the author.

Send all emails to: tammygarnes@gmail.com

Thanks! This will be a dynamic guide for all of us involved in Greek Life.

I'm just a little confused.

Are you looking for chapters who have set up their own foundations (separate from the GLO's foundation)? None of ours have done that and I'm guessing our IH would look down on it VERY much since it would compete with our own foundation.

Not spam but never mind

I just saw all these posts and I will have my office remove this posting as it appears to be completely misunderstood and not applicable to those posting remarks.

1. Yes it's 501(c)(3). My office made a mistake. I have dedicated my professional life to helping small nonprofit organizations and have chaired a probono program specifically on 501(c)(3)s (so yes, I do know what it means). The materials are through the American Bar Association Tax Section and are free to the public - called the Tax Exempt Toolkit (google it, surprise it does exist).

Not sure why I got nasty comments about my assistant's typo, but hey people are cruel. In any event, I try and help charities and that is really what this is about.

2. Cal Lutheran does not have a law school. I taught Nonprofit Law to undergrads and in the Maters program. Yes, you can take Law classes outside of Law School.

3. 501(c)(3) foundations that are linked to 501(c)(7) organizations is the focus of the book and has been a source of confusion for some organizations (hence the point of the book).

I sincerely hope that this clarifies matters and we will be removing all postings.

Sincerely,

Shannon King Nash, Esq., CPA

First of all, no Tom, this is not spam, it's called research.

Secondly, yes SB, Sororities and Fraternities, especially African American ones at the Graduate level, have Foundations that operate seperately from their chapters social thrusts. The author for this book recently spoke to a packed house at the Alpha Kappa Alpha National Boule on this subject and has consulted with Greek Alum chapters thoughout the country as well.

Obviously our groups are different, but in the Af-Am Greek World it's a question our office gets at least twice a week. As active Greeks we look forward to providing information that can be used as a road map for others.

Thanks for the reply.
