Freak Weather
During recruitment in 2004 we had some freak weather. We woke up on the morning of Skit Day (August 14) and the temperature was 57.2! I had to wear a sweatshirt to the dorm! Also that year, we had to deal with outer bands of rain and wind from both Hurricane Bonnie AND Hurricane Charlie. There was major flooding on Auburn's campus which inclusded several chapter rooms and Parker Hall where Auburn's web server is housed (in the basement of the lowest building on campus- go figure!). The entire university website was down for several critical hours when panhellenic was trying to generate invitation lists.

Not weather but freaky - when I went through "rush" 1989 . . . on the second day the New Madrid fault decided to say "hello remember me." Sounded like a piano had fallen, or more like 6 piano's fell above us.
We were in our rho chi group and everyone freaked out . . . it wasn't like a massive earthquake but since I don't ever remember any happening in Alabama in my life up to that point we thought it was wierd. But, at least all of us "rushees" had something to talk about at the parties that day Funny thing was a couple of weeks later Pike had a party and the t-shirts said "It wasn't pikes fault, it was the New Madrid fault." |
5 years ago, it snowed on my college's graduation.

A Hurricane was heading right towards Raleigh during recruitment like 3 years ago and the NPC council decided to move up Pref night one night. Usually PNMs have Wednesday off then Pref Thursday, Bid Day Friday...but the hurricane was supposed to hit on Thursday and hoping that Bid Day could still be Friday they told all the chapters to move Pref night up to Wednesday...they announced it Wednesday morning!! Many chapters reserve special spots in Raleigh (historic houses/gardens, etc.) for Pref...so they were basically screwed. It all worked out though. Chapters really had to do a lot of work in a short ammount of time though.

It wasn't weird, but it was just a change from what we expected:
I go to school in northeastern Ohio. Rush is in early September, so it's still fairly warm out. Girls wear skirts to their evening rounds and don't even need jackets usually. Well, last year rush was pushed back 2 weeks because of a big university event. We figured the weather wouldn't be much different. We were so wrong. The night of House Tours, it was BELOW FREEZING outside. It had been nice out all day, so that night, all the PNMs wore skirts or dresses and hadn't even bothered to bring coats! Usually, the PNMs take buses to the houses and wait outside for like 30 minutes (with their Rho Chis) until the party starts. It was SO cold that night, all the chapters got special clearance from Panhellenic to let the PNMs into the houses as soon as they arrived so they wouldn't freeze. We had to wait in the lounge upstairs while the PNMs sat in our living room til the party was scheduled to start. The Rho Chi's are supposed to stand outside for the entire party (about 45 minutes), but it was so cold, our Panhellenic told us to let them come sit in our kitchen with blankets so they wouldn't have to stand outside! |

In 2004, we had 3 hurricanes hit during recruitment/spirit week. There were some days that had to be done at night, in the middle of the day during classes, and on the weekends. And if you did not make it a night it was not like you were cut right away, because of the extrenuating circumstances.
I believe this recruitment went on for an additional week or two, outside the normal time period. I remember hearing my sisters say how they didn't get to do mock recruitments and such because the school was closed due to hurricanes. Bid Day was on a Thursday that year, and I remember we had a little ice cream gatherintg before we could actually have a real bid day on the weekend! Crazy Florida weather! |
My freshman year of college, it was 75 degrees on chapel day. It isn't that big of a deal, except that chapel day normally happens on the Sunday before Martin Luther King Day. Normally we have an inch or so of snow on the ground at this time of the year.
