Big Brother Chapter
Some comments in the "Daily Facts" thread made me think of this, but I
thought it better to start a new thread. WHICH CHAPTER WAS THE "BIG BROTHER CHAPTER" OF YOUR CHAPTER? A BBC is the chapter which provided the ritual team for initiation of the "founding fathers" of a new chapter (BBC term invented by me ;) ) I remember an old Paed. that had this info in it...I also remember it had the WRONG BBC for my chapter (Gtown). So I'll get it started...here are the ones I know: BBC of Georgetown is Hanover (ThKN) [Univ of KY when Union occurred] BBC of Eastern KY U is Georgetown BBC of Western KY is Georgetown BBC of Vanderbilt (re-installed 1991) is Union Univ. [I think the original Vandy chapter, 1920's-1930's, was installed by Cumberland Univ chapter which hasn't been open in decades. Or maybe they installed themselves....many of the "founders" in the 1920's were alums from other chapters] Probably the Paed dropped this list as there were more and more closed/ rechartered chapters with multiple BBCs (And to make room for instructions on "how to tie a tie" ;) ) Of course Cole installed most of the early chapters solo, so by default that would be Boston I suppose. Any others? |
UF (Epsilon Mu) was installed by Auburn (Omega).
USF (Lambda Mu) was installed by UF (Epsilon Mu). As for the origional UF TKN chapter, I don't know. UF was one of the few campuses where LCA and TKN didn't get along at the merger so most of the TKN history and papers have been lost. |
The founders at Florida Tech were initiated by Florida Southern. But since I can recall returning borrowed regalia to Stetson prior to installation (when we had to have our own), perhaps they were more of a Big Brother Chapter.

Wow, it has just dawned on me that I was chapter president, vice-president and risk manager... as well as IFC president and secretary... and never once did I even think about what chapter initiated my chapter's first class.
That's good history to know and I wish I'd known that in order to have the fraternity educator teach it to the new associates. |
For our 70th Aniv. a few years ago we were actually able to get in contact with one of the brothers from Auburn who was at our installation. We managed to do a conference call with him, Doc Smith (GHPhi, Order of Merit), Doc Dirghalli (Former GHA), Tony Dunn (Order of Merit), and others. It was amazing to hear a 90 year old man talking about the birth of our chapter

re: U Fla. ThKN chapter
The UFla ThKN chapter was one of the founding chapters, so they
installed themselves. The founding ThKN chapters all had "Badge Out" ceremonies on Oct. 11, 1924 that mostly re-enacted the founding of the Grand Chapter on June 9. ThKN used this ceremony for installing new chapters. It differed slightly from "regular" subsequent initiations. So we can list those 11, plus Westminister that was installed before Oct 11, as not having "Big Brother Chapters". They'd have "Union BBC's" though. Since initation into ThKN "counted" as initiation into LXA (there was no need for ThKN initiates to see the 'new' ritual, though they were encouraged to), many of the UFla ThKN's may have never seen LXA ritual. |
re: returning (and stealing) another chapters equipment
Jono, your comment about returning stuff to another chapter reminded me
of being Phi at the Vandy colony. Surprising how much stuff a new chapter has to come up with, and how much it costs! We STOLE two entire sets of equipment from other chapters!! Ha Ha! The first time we did our own initiation, I contacted Phi at Western KY (closest chapter to Vandy) and got permission to borrow their stuff. But when I and another Vandy brother arrived the the WKU house, no one was there except two newly-initiated brothers....their Phi was no where to be found. So without asking us anything "secret", we convinced the two NIBs to help us remove the padlock from their storage room and haul off everything they had! We returned it of course. But our only 'proof' of being brothers from another chapter was that we were wearing jerseys with letters! The second set we stole, we didn't return it....and Vandy still uses it! There was an alum from a 'dead' chapter (will probably never rechartered) that was very active with our alum assoc. The last Phi of his chapter KEPT their entire set of equipment in a closet in his own home. (He was supposed to send it to HQ, but never did...the last actives of the chapter felt HQ had stabbed them in the back when they took their charter for low numbers). So the alum working with us contacted their last Phi and 'borrowed' the equipment....and we never gave it back. HQ (later) said it was OK, since it should have been given to HQ eight years earlier anyway, and since the chapter will probably never reopen. Fun times!! |
As far as the UF chapter, I've been told that the brothers from LCA and TKN didn't like each other so I'd assume that most of them never saw the ritual. Supposedly we're one of the only chapters where there was a problem during the merger.

Mu Zeta @ California
There were no Zetas on the west coast when we were chartered - '12 or '13, and I suspect that Cole simply mailed a copy of his ritual and the guys did all by themselves, initiating themselves in the process.
That sounds like the sort of thing that Warren Cole might have done. |
Funny How things change overy Years!
I am sure that many GLO''s also have skeletons in the Closets! Warren Had an Idea as many of us did and did what needed to be done! Simplistic as it may be but it happened.!:D So Here We are today trying to discuss this now so late in life!:D Hail a Cup to Warren and every Member after Him who has promiogated His Ideas!:) We Be Here aint We!?:D |

Drury Un. Colonized LX Z in 1966 and re did Ritual 40 years later for the new re build.
Actual Chartering was done by Kansas State in 1969. |
