JonBenet Ramsey's Mother Patsy Dies

Patsy Ramsey, the mother of slain child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, died on Saturday from cancer in Atlanta, the family's attorney told CNN.

Ramsey's husband, John, was at her side when she died at about 3:30 a.m., attorney L. Lin Wood told the cable network. Ramsey, 49, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1993, underwent treatment and lived cancer-free for nine years, Wood said. Three years ago she suffered a recurrence, he said.

JonBenet, 6, was found beaten and strangled in the family's Boulder, Colorado, home on December 26, 1996, in a case that remains unsolved. Her parents came under the Boulder police's "umbrella of suspicion," but a grand jury issued no indictments.

The slaying drew intense media coverage focusing on JonBenet's success in youth beauty pageants, the family's affluence and mysterious elements of the case, including a note that initially led police to believe the girl had been kidnapped.

"Over the last two, three years they have come to understand there's been a shift in public opinion about the death of JonBenet and people realize now that this family was very much victims of that murder and have suffered because of it in terms of the false accusations made against them," Wood said.

It sucks when anyone dies, but victims my a**.

I got a lot of crud at the time this happened, but for some reason, I never thought they had anything to do with it. I don't know why...maybe I can't reconcile the thought that "normal" people would do something that horrible. There was a case a town over from mine where something similar happened; the stepfather was accused, convicted, and his conviction was later thrown out, so that probably plays into my thoughts here.

At any rate, whether or not she was innocent, it's in God's hands now.

Obviously, the Jon Benet case was huge here in the Denver/Boulder area. It was just so strange that it was really difficult to try to figure out.

My gut feeling is the Mrs. Ramsey murdered Jon Benet and Mr. Ramsey covered for her. Clearly, I have no proof whatsoever -- what seemed like reasonably strong evidence to me wasn't enough for an arrest, I guess. Of course, we only heard about the evidence in the media, and who knows what the Boulder cops may have held back.

If my feeling turns out to be true, I guess she got away with murder.

The question is, does it really matter now?

I would like to say Rest In Peace, but I can't quite bring myself to do it, and I feel kind of bad about that.

I feel very badly that anyone who's only 49 dies of such a horrible death, and I'm sure the past years have been terribly rough on her, guilty or not. From what I've read about the case (and I'm hardly a forensic scientist), someone in that house had to be the murderer.

The next weeks could be interesting, especially if John Ramsey says, "Well, now that she's gone, Patsy left this statement..." or something similar. I tend to think, though, that both parents were active in the death of their daughter, and that it was an accident poorly covered up (which, if you've read or heard any of Cyril Wecht's theories, I tend to believe his.)

What were his theories?

:( I feel sorry for the Ramseys they have had enough tragedies in their lives.I don't possibly see how a mother could kill her own child! so I was in disbelief about the whole JonBenet episode. My prayers go out to that family.

He goes through the timeline, who had access to JonBenet at that time, the instruments used for her bondage & death, and what her autopsy showed. The chance of it being a random person who was in the house for theft or whatever becomes terribly slim under his "investigation" (I put that in quotes as the police so bungled this case, he had to go with what photos he saw and people he could talk to). JonBenet was a child who had been sexually abused (but not raped) over a long time, and had the scars to prove it.

If Cyril Wecht's name sounds familiar, he's one of the foremost forensic pathologists who disagrees with the Warren Commission.

Was the family name something like "Durwillerbie" or something similar? I just saw that case on American Justice. Heartbreaking!

Yes. The Jaclyn Dowaliby case happened in Midlothian, IL, which is right next to my hometown, back in 1988. Jaclyn was 7 when she disappeared; 4 days later she was found dead in Blue Island, IL. Her stepfather, David, was convicted, but was later freed by an appeals court. To this day, the crime remains unsolved.

I saw a show on it - I thought it was American Justice, too - and it highly insinuated that Jaclyn's uncle (or was it step-uncle?) was heavily regarded as the main suspect. He had been institutionalized, and his alibi for the night Jaclyn was killed admitted that she had lied. I think they also insinuated that Richard Dailey's political ambitions had a lot to do with David Dowaliby's original conviction, too.

FWIW, I tend to think the uncle did it as well. The uncle was able to describe Jaclyn's bedroom in minute detail, despite never having been inside the Dowaliby house. It's possible that he could have gotten the info. from Jaclyn's paternal grandmother who did have visitation rights. I've heard that Jaclyn's dad believes his brother is innocent, and still thinks the stepfather did it.

As for Daley, well, he's a politician. I do think he used the case to further his career; I never got the feeling that he cared about who killed Jaclyn; he was more interested in the conviction to make his record look good.

On a side note, there's a book on the case called "Gone in the Night" which I liked until it became a truly horrid mini-series with Shannen Doherty.

I think there was a Lifetime movie on this, or maybe I saw it on American Justice. I know I watched it somewhere, and it was really sad.

Mrs. Ramsey was burried still under the "umbrella of suspicion" as the Boulder Police called it. Other local and Federal officials said they lean toward the intruder theory.

Unless new evidence shows up or someone confesses, I suppose we will never know.
