Miami Recruitment Question
I have a family friend going through recruitment at the University of Miami this fall. I know that other Florida recruitments are really competitive and recs are pretty important at schools like FSU and UF... is that the case at Miami? According to their Greek Life site, a lack of recs won't negatively impact a girl's recruitment, but I know of several other schools who say that even though it isn't exactly true.
So, my questions are: 1. How competitive is rush at Miami? 2. How necessary are or aren't recs at Miami? |
From what I've seen, UM recruitment is not as cutthroat as say, UF or FSU. I'll ask around to see how important recs are and let you know. I have some strong contacts at that campus.

More importantly, how are you sleeping at night knowing that one of your family friends is going to Miami.

I'd say that recruitment @ UM is competitive, but not as large scale as any of the state schools. There are no houses, just suites...and I think there are only 6-7 sororities (as opposed to UF/FSU who have 12+). So, the chapters can be very selective.
Getting recommendations is never a bad thing. |

I agree. Recs never hurt, but South Florida is like another state... recruitment at schools like FIU and Miami are much more low-key than the rest of the state.

FIU...
I have met only one sorority girl from UM but she gives me the impression that it's not very difficult. At FIU, recs and not required at all because almost everyone is the first to try to go greek in their family. I would say if there was a particular place she really liked, get a rec and for all the others she perfectly alright taking her chances.

Yes, but @ UMiami, there's a lot of older alumnae interaction, plus girls who are multigenerational legacies, so the chapters there are very familiar with recs. FIU, on the other hand, has many students who are the first (women) in their families to go to college, much less join a sorority. And the sororities DO get many transfers in from other schools, like UF, FSU, & UCF who affiliate. |

I spoke to my friend at UM..
Recruitment is definitely not as competitive as it is at some of the larger state schools. Recs are a good idea, although some chapters don't use them, there are other chapters that rely on them heavily. She said that quota additions are common and if a young woman goes all the way through the process, maximizing all her options, her chances of placement in a chapter are VERY high. Hope that helps...! |
