Timing of Police Raid (Dartmouth)

All right, class, can we have a show of hands and maybe a short opinion exchange session here? Everybody's read or seen news coverage of the "Animal House" raid at Dartmouth, right? How many people think that the police raid was deliberately timed to coincide with the school's commencement weekend?

All right. Anybody think the timing was just a coincidence?

We do have a cynical bunch here, don't we?

The student paper ( http://www.thedartmouth.com ) has some updates with what I'd call rumors and speculation until the warrant and other documents are unsealed.

I was pleased to read this.

"Engelman added that College administrators, including President James Wright, are being supportive of the fraternity.

"I know the brothers are a little bit bitter and understandably so because this is not a situation that is of their making," Engelman said."

Raid

Since the first news, I have not heard a bit about this.

As my own home chapter turned into an Animal house of sorts, and is now gone, I am a bit interested in just what happened here.

Having witnessed two chapters shut down as an undergrad, it's not at all uncommon for a chapter to experience some type of serious investigation/judicial actions (from the university, national organization, or law enforcement) at the end of the academic year (which yes would also fall near commencement). This is a time when many members would be moving out and gives the summer for alumni, undergrads and campus officials to figure out what to do from that point and how the national organization will act or intervene. However, during the same time as when parents are arriving to campus - yeah, a bit odd. But, also looking at it from the other side, if the chapter had caused the campus such embarrassment from it's "animal house reputation" then is this the community taking its turn at embarrassment to the chapter? No, that's not just or right to do, but just a thought as I was reading it.

I know it's hard not to look so far into it if you're close to the situation, because I would feel the same way if it were my own chapter and try to see any reason why things would happen when they do. But if law enforcement did have their eye on the house for a long time (as the article indicates "...the search at the Alpha Delta house was part of a two-year investigation and that they expect to make arrests."), then really this shouldn't come as a complete surprise.

Raid et al

Very well said and written ekDZ1535. And, at many levels and for many reasons, I agree.
