Directing a play

I thought some of you creative artist types may be able to help me out.

I'm directing a play that takes place in an art museum.

I need music for the beginning of the show and don't have any ideas AT ALL.

The theme of the play is that "things aren't always what they seem" and I kinda want to stay away from "museum type" music i.e., classical etc.

There is humor and some twists in the play and drama so it has a lot in it.

If any of you have any creative ideas I would appreciate it so very much.

Thank you!

Who will be attending the play? Meaning, is this for a school production of some sort, or community theater with an adult audience?

Is it a well known play? If you give us the title, someone may have been in it/directed it/etc. and can give you advice on what they did.

Does it take place in a certain time period? Music from a certain era might be good.

Good questions. Community theater. An original piece that the audience (adults, affulent, interested in arts) will never have read/heard of.

Current time.

Title is A Skewed Nude.

It's about a painting.

Thanks a lot

What about music like Emerson, Lake and Palmer? Classical music done in a rock style. It seems like it would fit the theme of "Things aren't always what they seem"

I used the national anthem when I directed the american dream, but um...find somehting appropriate for the mood, but not the setting....techno or alt rock mix.

You might want to add music throughout at certain times for effect

It's been awhile since I've heard the music for it, so I don't remember how the song actually goes, but...

"Things Are Seldom What They Seem" - Gilbert And Sullivan
from the "HMS Pinafore"

Or you could go with a techno version of something by Beethoven or another classical composer. I know there are quite a few things like that out there.
