Satanic Songs
Question for the wise members of GC: Can one enjoy music which is basically satanic in attitude and still be considered a committed Christian?

But I have heard committed Christians often listen to tapes about masterbation. Okay, I've actually heard more than one pastor say that masterbation is NOT wrong, as long as you are not making an idol out of sex or the act of masterbation. I have tapes concerning the issue. Does anyone know if one is sinning if they listen to tapes on masterbation and also if they are sinning if they masterbate but don't make it into a religious event? -Rudey |
Not only is this an odd question, but this is an odd place to ask it. Oh well, I will take a stab at it.
First of all, if you are a 'committed' Christian, why would you want to listen to satanic music? Why is it so important? Why can't you just listen to the other music? Second, what is your definition of satanic music? Is it music that says stuff like "we worship you Satan" or songs that are of an anti-christ nature? I have heard of many different perspectives of what is considered satanic music. Some people I know would consider Hilary Duff to be of a satanic nature simply because she does not sing about loving God. I don't agree with that. Anyway, my point is that you make the decision for yourself what you will and will not listen to. In my opinion, if you have certain spiritual beliefs, why would you want to listen to music that destroys your faith? What sense does that make? I don't know if this thread is serious or not, because I still think GC is a weird place to ask it. This whole thing is probably just a joke. I answered anyway in case someone really wanted to know. So there is my daily wisdom. Thank you. :) |
I wonder the same thing. I posted a thread about the band H.I.M. questioning if they were devil worshippers because supposedly the name stands for His Infernal Majesty. I wish I coudl find the thread. Anyways, I love their music but I wouldn't feel right listening to it if it was considered satanic.

Ok, I have a question. I don't really know what you all are considering as satanic music, but I'm going to guess that it's the heavy metal and goth music. So my question is do you think that these bands seriously believe in the satanic lyrics they are spewing out or are they just trying to be tough and edgy to sell records? And if you feel like they're just doing it to sell records and that they aren't really a bunch of devil-worshippers, does that make a difference in whether or not it's ok to listen to their music?
My personal feeling is that a lot of the stuff that goths are into is pretty lame. A lot of them are just high school kids that are trying to be like their older, gothier friends (and in my opinion, after a certain age, if you're still rocking the goth look, you're super-lame) and trying to freak out their parents. I mean, how REAL can you be when you buy your clothes and your personality and your persona from Hot Topic. Personally, I think a lot of these kids are into the whole goth scene to freak their parents out and because they think they're being such rebels and non-conformists. And I think they're are bands that cater to that to sell records (also dressing goth, having "dark" lyrics, having a stage show or a music video that's "scary"). To me, it all just comes across as trying too hard, and that's lame. |

How REAL can you be buying your clothes at A&F? Or Aeropostale? Or Forever 21? Or The Gap? Or whatever is trendy at the moment? How REAL can you be buying Dolce & Gabbana purses? Or Gucci? Or ANY brand name for that matter? There are posers in some "labels", but just like anyone who shops anywhere there are people who will dress the way they feel comfortable. One person may feel their best wearing A&F but another may feel more comfortable wearing Hot Topic. Back on topic... entertainment is what it is... entertainment. Britney Spears gave off the persona that she was a goody goody and a virgin and whatever. Do you really think she was like that in real life? It's the same way with rockers. There are some who are hard and sing about hard stuff and live the life of partying, drinking and sexing. But there are some rockers who are pretty hard and live in nice houses and are genuinely good people. Now on the flip side of the satanic music thing... I know of a band who met through their youth gruop and was pretty religious, said they didn't want to be on MTV and whatever cuz they didn't want to sell out, a few years later they drop part of their name and OH have a video on MTV and get pretty popular. I laughed when I heard that they weren't such "good" boys and that drugs started getting involved. I won't say who it is but true story. |

I was at home last night. I know it is not the most fun way to celebrate my bday, but I really did not feel like going out. Oh well. I had fun answering the question. lol |

I think that a committed christian can definitely listen to the music. Granted, it would be frowned upon, but I think it ought to be acceptable.
Music is fortunate enough to embody both the musical sound & the message of the lyrics. Now, I think that it is equally acceptable for a christian to listen to a 50 cent song as it is for a Marilyn Manson song, because they can be listening solely for the beats rather than the message. How many girls out there do you see shaking their asses to songs about getting screwed & screwed over...they obviously do not approve the message...i really fail to see a difference in that sort of behavior and christians listening to musicians with satanic messages |
I've PM'd you.
