university greek relations

I'm new around here so I just have my first question since everyone seems to be from all over. But anyhow, how are fraternity and sorority relationships around everybody elses school? By this I mean, do the fraternities have stupid beefs with each other for no good reason like my school? Same with sororities. Any insight would be appreciated.

Hello Search Function

Many of the questions you are asking have been asked thousands of times. Look it up.:)

Welcome to GC. This place can be a lot of fun to share ideas and views. But, as you can tell from replies to 2 of your posts, many of the members have a "take no prisoners" view toward new people. Check in the threads directed at new members; it will give you ideas on checking on dates on threads, questions that have already been answered, etc. Also, if you haven't already, go to the Pi Kappa Phi thread and intro yourself. I'm sure your brothers will be happy to give you tips also.

At a school the size of USC (Im assuming you go to USC since your location is showing Columbia) there are always going to be stupid beefs because there is always gonna be one or two guys from one fraternity who get wasted and decide to start talking $h!t to guys from another fraternity. Stupid stuff like this is what leads to whole fraternities disliking each other. and I thought all the stupid high school drama was left in high school

Welcome to the board. Luckily (or unluckily), this has been an issue for quite a few people on this board. I think the competitive nature of some things (rush especially, although inter-fraternal athletics and IFC elections as well) can lead to rivalries among chapters. Sometimes they're friendly, sometimes they're not. Usually there's a reason, even if it goes back quite a few years (i.e. something that happened in the 70's has led to a rivalry today). Some people can hold grudges, and stories can be passed down that lead to hatred/jealousy of another chapter.

I'd definitely do a search, but if you can't find anything or have more specific questions, feel free to post them.

I think that's what gets to me about threads like this; posting extremely generic questions. "What does everyone think about hazing?" or "What socials do you do at your college?". If the OP wanted to ask "XYZ has a problem with ABC because in 1968 ABC tied XYZ's president to the flag pole in front of the Registrar's office naked smothered in honey, how do we help them bridge that gap?" then I think people would be more willing to jump in with an answer.

I think this is actually an issue on a lot of campuses, to the point where I think a general question works. Maybe he doesn't know how the feud got started. Maybe he doesn't want to give away too much info so the chapters don't get into trouble.

This is also one of his very first posts; I just think people should be cut more slack.

There has been beef that led to all kinds of drama and it usually just makes the entire IFC and all of the member chapters look pretty stupid by association. There were way too many fights between chapters and sometimes, a group from one chapter would hook up with a group from another chapter (this lead to almost "civil war" but I don't know what I'm talking about b/c it wasn't my chapter, I just know there was drama). I generally tried to avoid all the pettiness.
