Help Needed!!
Hey Lovely Ladies Of Z Phi B!
Ok, my bros at UMCP did a step the other night, and they're looking for feedback on it. It was their first time stepping in public, so basically they're wondering about stuff they could improve upon. Here is the link: PDPsi Stepping at APA1 They realized that some of the stomping could look like the Alpha train, so they ran it by the Alphas at UMCP at they were cool with it, in case any one was wondering. But yea, what was good, what was bad, etc? Thanks Ladies!!! -Nate |
...anything?? :(

Maybe you all should just stay away from stepping. It's not your tradition. You are mimicking, and that is never cool. Create your own traditions, and don't bite others'.

I think we can all agree that stepping (in it's modern form) originated from Black Greeks. However, to say that only Black Greeks can do that further segregates us all from each other. If we want to talk about "biting others" we could easily talk about the Greek System in general, and Black Greeks (and others) established fraternities as well. Indeed, Malik is a great example of an organization that didn't want to use things that represented, to them, the dominance of "white" cultural over other cultures. But many, many, many things we use originated in other cultures. Are we to say that only Black people can listen to Jazz? Or only white people listen to rock? Or only Latino people to Salsa? Or only Asian people to the er-hu and pi-pa (traditional Chinese instruments)? Or for that matter play them? I think being ignorant of the tradition is a problem. In this case it would be stepping without knowing where it came from. However, my brothers researched stepping, have friends who are Black who step, and ran it by brothers of a Black fraternity for their approval. Not to say that their opinion can speak for all of Black Greek life, but I think it was a kind and considerate move. Now, back to my original question: the form, etc. What did people think? Thanks Nate |
Wasn't feeling the first the first two steps -- they were trademark Sigma and Alpha steps respectively and I've seen them performed better.
The next few steps were nice. Could be more crisp, but I liked them. At around 3:30 in, I found myself wanting to hear something related to the fraternity, like a chant or song. The transition to the stroll at 3:45 or so..... it kinda sucked. As a performer, every single move once you step on stage MUST have purpose. There are too many ways that the boys could have transitioned to that stroll, but they just...walked. The stroll itself could have been more precise. All in all, I didn't hate it, and would still invite them to the show at GU next fall or spring. (I looked at this strictly as a performer....there is no bias in my opinions :)) |
Thanks Rashid!!! :)

Step Show review
Though not yet a Greek, I have seen a lot of steps by a lot of different orgs. I applaud you guys on your efforts and say keep up the good work. I do agree that you guys can get more crisp in your movements and a little more choreographed. As stated before, some vocals could be nice too. But practice will make perfect!!! Don't stop! Rep your Org!
