Congressman at Party...big deal.

Proof Democrats need to stick to issues and come up with some ideas.

Do people who don't know anything about GLO's take issue with this? I don't see the big deal.

Is there actually a difference between the Two Partys when The Individals get to Congress?

DeltAlum 04-30-2006 04:40 PM

Yawn. What a non-issue.

macallan25 04-30-2006 07:17 PM

Who cares, we've had senators and representatives come to parties. The ones that were from our chapter come by two or three times a year.

Politicians at greek houses, parties

my word, there were loads of enthusiastic greek politicos. Bob
Dole, a really neat guy, was a gung ho Kappa Sig. Governor Docking, father and son, Betas, Milton Eisenhower, SAE, Ronald
Reagan, Billy Tauzin, Frank Morrison, all Tekes, golly, each one of
you all could cite a politician who'd show up at his fraternity, and
would shake hands, mix, and ask for nary a vote. They were there to be with their brothers, nothing more.
Ignorant newspaper reporters (who say 'frat') invariably say the
negative. They do not make a decent living. Do not pledge J
school folks, or be damned selective at least. Biz majors pay their
bills, lawyers either pay or evade successfully, and reporters leave
town with judgements galore.

This is true - he actually visited some Kappa Sig houses when he was running for President, and he has given quite a bit of money and support to the fraternity.

Kind of a funny story; he was on TV being interviewed by Sam Donaldson (also a Kappa Sig) at some point during his run, and at the end of the telecast Donaldson said something to the effect of "We hope you'll come back and see us again." Dole's response: "Of course I will, us Kappa Sigs have to stick together."

As to the comment about J-school, it can be tough going financially (at least at first), but let's not paint all reporters with the same brush. Take a walk through the J-schools at Northwestern, Syracuse, BU, Missouri, or the graduate program at Columbia.

Proud BU J-School grad (even if I'm on my way to law school)

Agree.

I have to add The Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.

It's become so "in" to blame reporters/media for most everything that it's almost a cliche.

True - Indiana has a very good school as well, and I think USC's j-school is also a good one.

A couple of my professors, Bob Zelnick (former correspondent for ABC news and now head of the journalism program) and Jack Falla (NHL beat reporter for SI) used to tell us that it would always be a great conversation starter to say you're a journalist. People either think you're a passionate muckraker or a sleazy tabloid writer, and no one seems to consider much in between.

Unfortunately, some of our own colleagues (Jayson Blair, etc.) have been making it harder for us to stand up for the profession.

Journalism school

if you re-read my acrid comments about journalism students, I
ended by saying "be selective."
My assessment stands, many J students are angry and on a crusade, often sent to some small town to begin, and there they
try to be 'investigative.'
I was raised in a back shop, ran a Mergenthaler, Kelly, Twin Model A Duplex, jobber, and carrier. My folks were newspaper
folks, my wife was a major metro area foods editor, so I have no
axe to grind. J students, still, make poor alums in my opinion.
There are some charming politicians, but then we have our pork
guys (Byrd, a TKE) and sleaze bags (Clinton, boy scout fraternity
and band boy) et al. In the final analysis, be selective on who
you pick...but you are the ultimate chooser.

J-Students

K, let me say right now that you all are entitled to your opinions...

But I am a JOURNALISM student... But i'm not going to be a journalist... why? Because i'm a Public Relations major (our program is in the school of journalism) - but we are also trained journalists as part of the curriculum...

So you can't lump all "J" students in one boat...

Our last Grand Prytanis (President) at TKE is a Public Relations person...

My chapter benefits from my P.R. train of thought... I've been a rush chair, rituals officer and am currently vice president...

But technically, I am a "journalism" student... and I plan to be more than a typically active alumni... I will be at Conclaves until i'm grey...

Just my 2 cents...

On another note, yes, our fraternity has had TONS of political figures...

Ronald Reagan had TEKES at the White House all the time... Visited TKE houses regularly... greeted Tekes first everytime he arrived somewhere...

We've had a Surpreme Court Justice, a national security advisor, MANY MANY people in the senate/house (including currently - Robert Byrd as an example), we've had governors from more than 6 states, etc...

Heck, our list of important people goes on forever...

So what if they wanted to mingle with their brothers for life?

Erik P Conard 05-03-2006 07:22 AM

all het up J students

one of the reasons we "paint with a broad brush" is to avoid the
incessant "define your terms" so common with philosophy men.
So, you can point out good J schools, yes, and for every one of them you have five bad ones. Use reason, and sometimes you
must paint with a broad brush then pull out the winners and let
the losers founder. Is that too tough to understand, or do you
have that bur in your saddle already?
Sigma Delta Chi (Society of Professional Jornalists) and Theta Sigma Phi (Women in Communications) wanted so bad to divest
themselves of Greek Letters...angry ones...can you live with that?
