Exxon draws heat for sponsoring Masters

Shareholders claim support of the golf tournament violates company's policies on discrimination.
April 5, 2006: 2:50 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Exxon Mobil is under fire for practicing what some shareholders are calling high-profile sex discrimination.

A group of shareholders say that the company's sponsorship of events like the Masters Golf Tournament, which is held at the men-only Augusta National Golf Club, is in direct violation of the company's stated policies on discrimination.

The annual tournament has drawn criticism in recent years for being held at a private club where women are barred from membership. This year's Masters starts Thursday.

Is this PC-ness to an extreme or are these shareholders valid in their concern? Should companies/organizations sponosr events that do not conflict their org's stated purpose and policies?

Oh POOR SHARE HOLDERS!:(

Exxon surpassed Wal-Mart as the highest profit Company in the USA!

Hell, they should have!

Dumbest thing I have ever seen is when they were in front of Legislative Committee and did not raise prices to make money, just to get people to quit buying Gass. Right!

Second dumbest is when the Committee agreed with them! Friggen Maroons!

I think that it is over blown pc BS.

I really don't care if there are women only golf clubs, or black only golf clubs, or any other specific type of club.

It's a private club and they should be allowed to do whatever.

In the case of Exxon, if it is that big of a deal then they should donate to a women's only club, as a percentage of their sponsorship to Augusta compared to the total sponsorship to Augusta

Those women probably pee standing up. Someone should try and get them to do AI.

It seems dumb to me.

Sponsoring an event is different from practicing discrimination. It sounds like this Burk woman has a specific agenda with respect to Augusta -- she's referred to as "a long-time advocate for allowing women members at Augusta National."

Most professional sports don't involve men and women playing together -- would she disapprove of a sponsorship with the NBA, too, or is it just the Augusta/women membership issue?

......so nobody cares that Exxon is making record profits off of hard working Americans many who have to make tough choices between buying gas or food or medicine.

You could move to Cuba and care I suppose :)

--PS look up the definition of Capital Expenditures on investopedia.com and then look through Exxon's financial statements (available to the public) to actually understand what "Record profits" really are (not what politicians and the media say they are).

No...really it's a serious problem when greed trumps caring about one's fellow man or woman....If we are gonna cry and yell every chance we get how much of a Godly nation we are let's try showing it. It's not only Exxon who's giving it to the America people w/no grease it's Shell, Texaco and the whole gang I only mention them b/c of this thread and the fact that they (Exxon) have knocked Wal-mart from the top of list profit makers in America.

Again, look up the definition of capital expenditures. Then go to Exxon and look for yourself at what they make in terms of revenue and how much they spend on capital expenditures.

You're not going to believe me so I'm trying to get you to look at it yourself.
