United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today named Larry D. Johnson, Nebraska '67, of the United States, an official with extensive experience working for the world body, as assistant secretary-general for legal affairs, a position he will take up on 1 May when he succeeds Ralph Zacklin.

Mr. Johnson formerly served as the Legal Adviser of the International Atomic Energy Agency (1997-2001) and Chef de Cabinet, Office of the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (2003-2005). He joined the United Nations Secretariat in 1971 and last served at Headquarters in 1997.

Currently, Mr. Johnson is professor of Global Affairs at New York University’s Center for Global Affairs and visiting Professor of International Law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. Previously, Mr. Johnson was visiting professor of International Law at the University of California, Davis, School of Law and at the New England School of Law.

He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Society of International Law and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

The 61-year old attorney graduated from the University of Nebraska (B.A.), Harvard Law School (J.D.) and the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (M.P.A.).

My favorite law school prof is a Nebraska Beta who graduated the year before the guy. From what I understand, so many of the guys from that chapter in that time period were VERY successful

That's great, but I don't envy him working at the UN. Things there are so highly politicized, almost nothing ever gets done.

(I ran a contract for my parent company there last summer)
