Hair Styles For African Americans

Is it a particular hair style that you like?
How are you wearing your hair?
What hair styles don't you like?

As for me, I really love to see a Black woman in a well maintained short sassy hair cut. But I neither have the time, the skills, or the money to maintain such a stlye. I need a style that I can just take the scarf off in the morning and spray some oil sheen. I also like the locs, but I'm too scary to go for it. It goes through such an ugly stage, about a year, before it really starts looking like something. Plus not all locs look good, I perfer the thin ones.
I wear micro braids. Found a woman who does them for $150. I keep them up about 8 weeks, they can last longer.
I just hate to see sista's in those latch braids, who thought of that style? Also can't get with sistas dyeing their hair blond. Although I seen a few that actually look good, but it still doesn't sit right with me.
Just my 2 cents.

My hair is pretty boring lately. I usually wear it wrapped and curled under. It's easy to maintain, and at this point in life, that's exactly what I need! lol..If I'm going somewhere special, I try to do it different. Depending on where I am going.

I've never seen anyone with latch braids, and now I am wondering what they look like?Their used to be a good discussion board on www.blackhaircare.com but they took the site down or something???

I have my hair in a short natural and it is the BEST thing I have ever done for myself. Admittedly, I am a little lazy so it's perfect for me. Just brush and go, and get my best friend to shape it up every so often. We get so caught up in having hair that's fried, dyed and laid to the side that we forget to enjoy life. I love the fact that I don't have to plan activities around my hair anymore. (As in, ooo, I can't go swimming this day because my hair is gonna go back.) PLEASE! Wear an easy style that works for you and go on exemplifying that FI-NER Womanhood!

I like wearing the pony tails. You can go at least two weeks with it up, sometimes longer. I get lazy at times and hate curling it every morning or rolling it up at night. Give me something that will last with little maintenance.

My hair since December is streaked (highlighted) with reddish tones. It is a lot more colorful than it was at Boule 2000 for those who saw me. I've been coloring it plum/wine/burgundy for years, but you could only see it in the sunlight. Now with the highlights it is significantly more noticeable.

I change my style a week at a time, depending on my mood. At the moment it is "Shirley Temple" curls. The next 'do' will be a wrap. I like variety. Mags I like to consult for hair styling ideas are Black Hair, Hype Hair, Try It Yourself, and the "In Salon Only" books..
I don't do fantasy styles. If I think I would look out of place with a style, I won't have it styled that way. Contemporary, but not "Crazy". http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

What do yall think about the skinny micro-braids? I have been wanting to get those but I fear that it may take my hair out. Any suggestions? Experiences?

I rodded my hair last week...I have curly curly hair for days now! Yes, I am a self professed HAIR HOPPER!

I have had them about 4 times in the last 2 years. I enjoy braids because it's low maintence. I like the micro, only problem was taking them down. Some you can wash really well and just brush out depending on how they put them in. But on 2 occassions I had to take them out(refused to pay someone to do it), it took all day and that was with the help of my man. But they last at least 3 months, I usually only go 2, because I like change.

For those who know me, my hair is on the long relaxed side. Whole life, had a head full of hair. Therefore I'm so lazy with my hair that I don't care whether I get caught in the rain or anywhere else! :-) I never hot curl it outside of when I hit the salon, although I will roll it every now and again. Most often, I wear it in a (messy) ponytail or bun, 'less I go somewhere special http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. I sleep on a satin pillow case with generous use of jojoba oils and deep conditioning and trims/cuts at the salon (whenever I manage to stumble there)--that's about it for the maintenance routine. When I change jobs one day, however, and work near my hair stylist (and best friend), then I will probably cut it short. Both my mother and grandmother cut all that fried and dyed...well, maybe not always the dyed http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif mess out and both wear theirs in a short natural.

Frankly, I love the loc'ed, knotted, twisted, micro-braids looks on folks. For relaxed hair, I like to see soft, moveable, healthy hair & styles. I'm a simple gal, so I'm not into the fancy and fantasy styles, nor the old school "hard press" and "hard curled" looks--a wet set is cool, because it's healthy for relaxed hair.

As I stated in another post, I'm heading to Nassau in May, and will either get braids (tender-headed though) or tie "all that hair" in a bun with the "extra curly #2" http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif on top of my head. I WILL NOT be concerned about my hair with all the swimming and beach hopping I plan on doing!

LOL@ Sweet Deliverance: Soror-girl, I love highlights too! I put some dk. blonde in my hair back in the day—loved the look, but it took two years to grow out of my hair completely! If I ever did that again, I’d put highlighted pieces in it—then I could take it out when it got tiresome.

I rock the roller wrap. I have really long hair so that is the easiest style for me next to the ponytail.

Let's see:
Styles I like? Well I like short hair cuts to name a few who are sporting nice short styles.... Halle Berry,Bird on the series Soul food, and Eve. I also like the flipped style many are wearing either with short or long hair. I like long bone straight styles, dred locs (thin long ones), micro braids and naturals.

Styles I don't like? Anything with multicolors in it, I don't like stiff hair styles, big hair, two styles in one, not to fond of weave, especially if it isn't done right. I can't think of any celebrities with bad do's but there are plenty of folks walking around in Florida with some.

As for myself, I am currently calling myself growing out my hair. It is in a short style but it almost long enough to wear in a bob...just a few more inches! Eventually I would like to grow it back to how it was before I got so scissor crazy...back down past my shoulders.

the wrap is the best thing to hit college campuses since sliced bread! wrap at night, comb in the morning and head out the do'. because i have really thick hair, when i shampoo and condition it (pantene), i put leave-in(911) and oil(botanicals) then setting lotion(lottabody) and sit for about 30 minutes under the hair dryer then blow dry it. if i wrapped it while wet and sat under the dryer, it would take about 2.5 hrs! after that, i curl it once and wrap it for the rest of the week till it is time to do all over

I hope life isn't a big joke, because I don't get it.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean ? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind
