Important Recruitment Question!!
Back when I rushed, I knew that jeans were frowned upon, even though the published Rush Guide said that designer jeans were okay.
Then I read here last season that the same was true, even if they were the best of designer jeans (btw, are Lucky Brand jeans considered designer?). Let's assume that the Rush Guide rules are the same & say that designer jeans are okay. If your best friend, or your daughter asked you, would you tell her to go ahead and wear the jeans, or would you suggest something else? And if so, what? While I'm posting this here, I'm open to answers from all sorority women. HELP!!!! |
i'm sorry...when I rushed back in 1991 at ASU, the only time I saw jeans was AFTER all the parties and the ladies were hanging out....
I think rush was pretty competitive at ASU at the time, but I was clueless so who knows? I nice pair of slack, "causal" pants (i.e. dockers) I think would be appropriate....but NEVER jeans... Unless the campus was COMPLETELY laid back and they used a non-structured informal rush style (is taht what its called?) but even then I don't think jeans are the correct way to go...especially with thongs and hipster jeans being popular today....can we all say: TACKY /em I feel like I sound like a fussbudget /em |
^^ See, that's what I'm worried about - that the Rush Guide says one thing, expecting those "in the know" to know that it just isn't done. Obviously, I know someone going through Recruitment and her Rush Guide says to wear jeans!
Any other thoughts? |
When I went through recruitment, I happened to talk to family friends prior to going through recruitment (they were in a sorority at a different university than I went to).
Their advice to me? * No jeans - they told me that they (and if I'm remember correctly, this meant their entire chapter) frowned on PNM's wearing jeans the first round of recruitment. Now, 6 years later, I can't remember anything else they gave me, but that's the one thing I always carried with me. Now, again it goes back to campus climate. Where I'm advising now, the chapter wore jeans for 2 days of recruitment, and PNM's wearing jeans on the first two days were okay - as long as they looked good. |
Other then preference day PNM's almost always wear jeans or shorts at WSU. I think there was even one or two days when we would wear them with our shirts or whatever for our recruitment outfits. But WSU is a very laid back recruitment.

Let's think MidWest, ladies, if that helps.

I think you've got to find someone from THAT campus, Honey. I've seen plenty of campuses where it is totally appropriate to wear jeans. But we all know how it feels to be underdressed- not fun! Try to find a contact from that campus so they can tell you for sure.

i would say definitely not for informal, but jeans would be alright for the 1st round (but not with tennis shoes or sneakers).
the rho gam's publish a guide about all the chapters, rush, clothing guidelines etc, so we "judge" the women coming through based on if they are appropriately dressed based on what they were told by their rho gams. |
I don't think jeans are ever appropriate... not even a pair that cost $46576513215.45
UNT (at least in my opinion) was not one of those severely-Southern, cut throat types of recruitment schools. While it was somewhat competitive, I think it is more laid back than most Texas schools, and I have NEVER even seen jeans there. Like someone mentioned I think jeans are OK after for bid-acceptance gatherings, but I wouldn't wear them to recruitment. Personally I think it is best to err on the side of being over dressed (with the exception of wearing a bright pink circa 1980's prom dress :p) than being under dressed and wearing jeans to recruitment. |

For example, I helped GWU last fall during their first night of recruitment-- fall/winter. The PNM's were casual/trendy and many wore jeans, while the sororities were more dressed up with slacks and skirts. But it was expected for the PNM's to be in jeans, jean skirts, etc. It was an early evening event during the school week. This attire would never have worked at my undergrad-- but then again, our recruitment was held during the day under the brutal August sun! Some midwestern schools are more formal than others, so I wouldn't go by a generalization. I think she just has to ask a sorority woman from that school. Try calling the office of Greek Life and talking to a recruitment counselor or seeing if anyone from the Alumnae Panhellenic in the college town will chat with her. Sorry I can't be of more help! |

And I really think it does depend on the campus. |
