Tax Time

How many of you file your own taxes? If so, do you use a tax preparation software program? Which one? Do you plan to e-file this year? I just did, and I love it!

Okay, I know it is not the most pleasant topic especially if you owe taxes but we all have to deal with it. Just be glad you don't live in some of the Western European nations with their super high tax rates.

GiggyZ,
My hubby and I have used Kiplinger's (sp?) Tax Cut for the past 2 years (and plan to use it again this year) and we absolutely love it! We bought a house in 1998 and did not originally realize that points and closing costs paid for by the seller counted against our tax burden (how live is THAT?!?!) We found out when we were going through the different agents in Tax Cut. You still have to keep decent records, but it asks great questions (in every day language) about possible deductions to make sure you get everything possible. Another thing we did not consider was the mileage to and from when volunteering. That is tax deductable too. The cost of the program (about $20.00) was even deductible! I would definately recommend it and given that we got our refund in our account in about a week was even better!

I do my own taxes! (Putting one of my degrees to work http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ) I e-file also and I love the convenience.

I hate taxes though! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif But yeah, compared to the Swiss, we've got it pretty easy!

Last year, I did my taxes the old fashioned way. It was also the first year I itemized deductions.

This year, I will try and use a program, just to see if I can squeeze more out of dear old Uncle Sam. I suppose I should file this month, eh?

Shelacious, FYI if you did not already know, if you find some deductions this year that you did not know you were eligible for last year you can go back and do an ammended return and get that extra $$$!! I was listening to a talk show on the radio the other day (If any of you can get Clark Howard in your area I encourage you to listen to him. He is a 'comsumer advisor' and has great advice on spending less and saving more! If he wasn't a geeky white boy and if I wasn't so in love with my husband I would think about marrying him!! LOL) and there was a woman who had mistakenly included child support in her income for the last 3 or 4 years. She filed amended tax returns and got over $9,000 in over payments back!! Of course, the IRS will not be giving you interest in those situation like they will charge you if you had underpaid for 3 - 4 years!!
