Researchers find hazing all over campus

Looks like someone is finally noticing that hazing is a problem with college organizations in general, not just Greeks:

http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2006/03/14/hazing

The researchers found that hazing was reported across many types of teams and student organizations. Varsity athletes, members of social and service fraternities and sororities, band and performing arts members and those who participate recreation and sports clubs all engaged in drinking games, were forced to sing or chant, and got sick or passed out from being forced to drink alcohol. Varsity athletes were by far the most likely group to participate in drinking games, with 60 percent of respondents from this group indicating that they had engaged in the behavior.

The findings also indicate that coaches and advisors play a somewhat surprising part in hazing rituals. Forty percent of the students who reported being involved in hazing behaviors also said that a coach or advisor was aware of the activity. Twenty-two percent of students said that their coach or advisor took part of the hazing rituals.

I'm sure they will find some way of saying that even though hazing isnt limited to greek orgs... greeks started it and are the main reason its still a problem.

Collegiate Greeks did not start "hazing"-- hazing has been going on as long as there have been any kind of organized groups-- the military is one of the oldest existing examples.

I don't advocate the tired anti-Greek college journalist who goes on a tirade against urban myths and tries to go "undercover" at fraternity rush to see what it's really like, but I think we as Greeks and we as a community can make better and more informed decisions when we know what is going on in the world and on our college campuses. And part of this is reading news reports of alleged hazing incidents. If we don't acknowledge the problem exists, then it continues and spreads--- maybe to your chapter or it effects your relative or your friend.

Yes, the news can sensationalize-- they need to sell newspapers. But overall, I like knowing what's going on-- I'd rather know the truth than see something swept under the rug and made worse.

While what You say is true, there is also a difference on How Greeks are Publicized isnt there?

Local TV Top of the news in KC about XYZ Fraternity Hazed and carried it to the height of Stupidity like there was nothing else goning on in KC.

Got out of bed and emailed them at 10:11 PM.

Their reply was well, there are Greeks on Staff and maybe We did belabor it a bit. DA!

We take it in the rear as We have Greek Letters and are not giving any thing back to the schools. Right!
