Fraternity and Sorority Badges on Ebay
 

Has anyone noticed how many fraternity and sorority badges have been selling on ebay recently?

I have been "rescuing" and collecting Kappa Kappa Gamma pins for a few years now, and all of a sudden, with the onslaught of ebay, I'm seeing badges of every sorority and fraternity imaginable!

People who are not GLO members are buying these pins up and collecting them . . . what do people think about this?

I have heard about this before and I know for a fact that there are Delta Zeta alums who are also rescuing our badges.
This I think is about as ridiculous as the fraternity secrets web site. It is unfortunate that this web site exists and even more unfortunate that initiated members actually give out this info. Its really disturbing. We've just got to stay true to ourselves and our houses and have enough respect for fellow greeks to not look at other's secrets. Fraternity secrets and rituals are sacred and not for anyone's eyes except those who are members. Some people just have no respect.

I have read about greek pins being auctioned on ebay. What are they listed under? I haven't been able to find anything like this.

There have been ALOT of Pi Phi pins on ebay lately. You can find them easily--You can search under any number of things:

"sorority pin"
"sorority pins"
"fraternity pin"
"fraternity pins"

or, for specific Pi Phi stuff, try

"Pi Beta Phi"
"Pi Phi"
"arrow pin"


Good luck! Kappa has tried really hard to "rescue" its pins and keep them "in the family" so to speak. I'd love to see other sororities and fraternities doing the same!!!

I wonder if the reason there are so many badges on e-bay is because people who deal in antique jewelry realize there are customers for their wares. (I remember once meeting a woman who had a PiPhi badge on her lapel, worn as a pin rather than as a badge. I asked her about her affiliation; she said, "Oh, it was my mother's. I just like to wear it." I suspect many badges get to dealers and to e-bay because "the pin was in mother's jewelry box.")

Alpha Gamma Delta makes it very clear that members have a "life-long lease" on their badges. Do those of you in other NPC groups have similar understandings? (When I was at headquarters for chapter consultant training, my fellow cc's and I got into the safe where all the badges of deceased and former members were kept. Kind of macabre! I wish they would recycle such badges....)

I am also a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, which has a "P.E.O. Will," instructions to survivors about the disposition of the emblem (as P.E.O. calls the badge).

When I asked my husband about his fraternity's policy he said firmly that he had purchased his badge and it was his to do with as he pleased. (Which was to give it to me. <g> )
