Sigma Phi Epsilon Suspends Purdue Chapter
Sigma Phi Epsilon has announced that it has suspended its chapter at Purdue. Excerpts from the news release on the Sig Ep national web site:
"In conjunction with Purdue University, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity today announced the suspension of its Indiana Alpha Chapter. This suspension is the result of an ongoing investigation into an event on November 15, 2005, which led to the hospitalization of a new member with alcohol poisoning. The chapter will be placed under an Alumni Advisory Council that will conduct a membership review in the coming weeks. In addition, the chapter was surcharged $5,000 for violating Sigma Phi Epsilon’s risk management policy. Members will also incorporate a member development program consistent with the Fraternity’s mission and values. Alumni volunteers and Headquarters staff are working with the Purdue University administration to change the culture in the chapter and return it to good standing. . . ." http://www.sigep.org/news/release.asp?release=107 |
Purdue Sig Ep
Very good chapters can do very stupid things.
This reminds of the flagship chapter thread, question? are you a top chapter if you haze and run the risk of getting closed down, I don't think so. |

That makes it a violation of the law as well as a medical problem. You bet your life this stuff actually happens. |

the whole chapter should not have to suffer because of a dumbass freshman that had no self control when drinking.

I just read a story in Fraternal News which, unfortunately, comes via e-mail so I can't do a link to it.
The article says the pledge had a blood alcohol level of .49 and was close to death in the ER. It also says that everyone except one active and pledge admits to have been drinking. I doubt that they are all 21 years old. They also said that they did not provide their own alcohol, which would indicate that the chapter provided it for them. Broken rules. Broken laws. That's not just one freshman. Goodbye charter. |
