Cyberspace Message Boards: Free? or Pay a Fee?
Greeks and Non-Greeks,
If your favorite cyperspace site (including GC) issued a fee ( monthly, yearly or one time only) to participate, would you? Do you see any advantages to incorporating a fee to participate? Are there any disadvantages (excluding the money factor)? If fees are incurred, would the number of "trolls" or regulars who log in under another name to cause havoc decrease? If you would pay, what is the maximum fee you would pay? Any thoughts? |
I would pay to stay on the MBs I visit regularly. Some to which I already make contributions. I understand there is a cost borne by the board owners, so if they are providing me with a source of entertainment and good discussion, I would help them bear the cost.
Now as for a maximum fee? Can't call that one, except to say it should be low enough to not prevent well-meaning posters from participating, but high enough to prevent trolls from joining on a whim just to cause havoc. But by the same token, serious trolls would probably just pay up. |
Not sure. I would not pay to participate on GC, that's for sure. I would pay for Nappturality, though. I've been thinking of contributing to that site for a while now, but I'm not a regular poster, so would it be a waste of money for me? *shrugs* I don't visit many other boards outside of my Yahoo groups.

I wouldnt pay because someone will always offer the same service for free.

hey ideal,
i'm a member of nappturality too. np offers a community that's rather unique, i think. i'm a subscribed member there, believe in the mission, and donate to help it stay alive. that's the measure for whether or not i donate to a site. does it offer some service or presence that affects me on a personal level and helps my well-being in some practical way. |
I have also been considering subscribing to NP. But like Soror Ideal, I am not a "regular" poster. I do frequent the weight loss and beauty threads. And the PJism in me visits the homemade and commerical products threads every now and then, but that's usually about it. Some folks get too carried away on the hair discussion boards with all that "nappier than thou" talk sometimes. However, some of the discussions are valuable, interesting, or just down right funny. I like the idea of NP and don't mind paying for it.
As far as GC, NOT! I think that GC is cool and all that, but I wouldn't dare pay for it. GC has gotten too far away from what it used to be. |
hey soror ideal, i took a peek in your album...niiiiiiiiice. i think i'd been in there some time ago. your hair is fabulous honey :D

I would never pay. I joined an MB for a popular syndicated radio show recently, because I really enjoy the show. ONce I joined, I found out that I had very limited access, unless I paid a fee. As much as I enjoy that show, I refuse to pay to post on a messageboard.

seriously, if we (regulars) were more disciplined in ignoring troll posts, trolls would leave sooner than they presently do, and GC would continue to be for most of us what we thought it was originally ....a cyber place to chill and converse. would I pay? ....I doubt it, but I might consider it. |
No deals out there.
I doubt I'd pay. Maybe since we have been here for a few minutes, we could be grandfathered in. I knew this had come up before, but I wanted see how the masses felt about this. I don't frequent too many sites. I have either forgotten my username OR my password OR both. :o Therefore, the ones I do frequent have SELECTIVE membership, which makes cyberlife there rather simple. :D |
