staying in a sorority

One of my best friends is in my sorority with me, and I just found out that she's transferring schools because of a personal situation. She doesnt know if she will continue Greek life at the school she'll be going to, and I'm really trying to encourage her to do it. i think it will help her meet new people at her new college, and I think she would bring a lot to the sorority still. What can I do to convince her to keep involved in sorority life?

If there a chapter of your friend's sorority at her new school, it probably would behhove her to at least check it out. I agree with you, membership brings a common bond across campuses and it will give her an instant home as a transfer.

As far as I know, she isn't required to join that chapter if she doesn't want to (and she'll won't lose her membership)and they may even take a vote in the chapter if they will let her affiliate. I don't know your group's policies but that info should be readily available to your members.

Let us know what happens!

But, tell her that she should only consider affiliation IF the new chapter is TOP TIER.

Wonder what kind of personal situation it is - if it's affecting her life enough that she's switching schools, it may have affected her GPA, too, and therefore this isn't even an issue. I can't think of any Panhel group that would even be allowed to vote on a member coming in with a poor GPA.

She's probably not sure about continuing Greek life because she's not so excited about the way the chapter has dealt with her and her problems at her current school. Is there something you can do for her as a send-off that will leave her with a good taste in her mouth? A party in her honor, a night together with all of the girls, a framed picture with well-wishes on the edge?

Other than that, what else can you do? It sounds like you're focusing a lot of energy on worrying about the details, but if there's something big enough to make this girl transfer, maybe you should try talking to her about THAT issue instead.

Sorority is important - for me, it's been even more so after college - but it's not life. Depending on what she's got going on right now, it may be taking a backseat to her personal issues for a real good reason.

And why the hell is this in the "Rush" forum?

Apparently, it's the only forum she can figure out how to post in.

Actually its not the only forum I know how to post it....I did not realize when I posted it that it was under "rush"....my apologies. But thanks for the good advice!

I think she should at least check it out, but I don't know what these personal problems are. If they're severe enough to switch schools then maybe it would be better for her to take alumna status so she can deal with her personal issues?

Every chapter is different, so maybe she will find a supportive group of girls at her new school, but who knows. You know her and we don't, so I think your advice might be more useful than ours.
